Show 50 CENTS Wednesday, December 22, 1993 Volume 72 Number 51 Karren Glover is honored by the Salina City Council Mayor Nyals Andreason presented a plaque of appreciation to Karren Glover for her service and enthusiasm given to the city council for the past four years. The mayor read a letter of thanks acknowledging Chief of Police Gordon Kiesel for his courtesy shown to persons traveling through the area during the month of September. The mayor asked if the council was ready to set another work meeting for the culinary water system. It was decided to wait until the new Stubbs and yea when mayor-elehis council are in office. Discussion was held on the proposal for custodial work for the city building. A decision was made to advertise for bids in the local newspaper. Bids would be received no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, December 20. Discussion was also held on planning an Open House for the public to tour the newly remodeled city offices. A date will be set when some of the contractors have come and finished their work, and the final inspection has been made. Recorder Betty Cowley asked in behalf of the building authority, if a piece of the carpet removed from the city building could be placed in the office at the equestrian center. The council gave their approval. Attorney Michael Jorgensen reported that a more completed feasibility study on the landfill will be presented at the January 17 meet' ing. ct Councilman Ron Crane dis- cussed with the council advertising bids for the dredging of the irriga tion pond. A proposal will be drafted and bids will be opened on January 17. A lengthy discussion was held on the annexation of the properties located on the borders of town. Councilman Dwaine Burr reported that Michael Crane, who could not attend the meeting, had asked for permission to place a roof at the park pavilion for an Eagle Scout Award. Discussion was held on the cost of the materials. Jim Casto will measure the area and solicit prices from area merchants. Approval was given for Crane to go ahead with the project Discussion followed on the placement of the Chamber of Commerce sign. A letter will be written to Utah Department of Transportation by the mayor requesting turn lanes for the area near S teven Roberts PI umb-inButch Cassidy Campground, and the new equestrian center. Councilwoman Nancy Frame reported she approached Newell Hales and Roy Cooke about serving on the zoning committee and so moved to accept these two names as committee members. The motion was approved. The highways include: State Highway 9 from St. George to U.S. Highway 89 in Ml Carmel. U.S. Highway 89, from the Arizona border west, then north to Interstate 70. It will also include Bryce Canyon National Park. State Highway 28 from in Salina north to in Nephi. Federal money is set aside for such improvements and if Congress approves the plan, it assumed that the projects will begin. Congress authorized up to $6.5 billion a year for the National Highway System. Improvements would make roads safer and boost the tourism economy, according to local leaders. Jack Thomas Cartwright found dead near Redmond - December 17, 1993 Jack Thomas Cartwright, age 54, of Redmond, was found dead in his vehicle early this morning near Redmond Salt Mine. Cartwright was an apparent victim of a gunshot wound. At this time it is not known if the victim had medical or other prob- self-inflect- lents causing him to take his life. The family has been advised by Deputy Johnson. The body was taken to the medi- cal examiner for an autopsy. Investigation will be concluded upon receipt of the medical examiners report, according to Deputy Dohnson and Sorenson, of the Sevier County SherifFs Office. |
