Without warning or fanfare, Blackhawk, accompanied only by his family members, arrived at the Uintah Reservation. The wound he received at Gravelly Ford was wearing on him, and onlookers said he looked wan and sick at heart He told the Indian superintendent that he was weary of war and bloodshed. He said that he now knew that his brother Mountain, who had lived in peace with the Whitemen all along, was right, and that he would stay on the reservation and live in peace. As gesture to the truth of his words, he asked the superintendent to cut off his braids. Blackhawk kept his word. He stayed on the reservation and farmed. But always in the back of his mind was the memory of the death and destruction he had brought on the white settlers, the same people who had once been his friends. At last Blackhawk made a plan. to the next town. Blackhawk visited every town and village from Payson to Cedar City and made peace with the people. Along his peace path, the people would meet at the town hall with Blackhawk, and hear him apologize in his own way. Following is an excerpt from one of these meetings: You need not be afraid of us anymore. I am sick of blood. Look at me! The great Mormon chief, Brigham Young, told me if I shed Mormon blood I should wither and die. I am going to see Brother Brigham, then I will go to the place where I was bom, and I will die. Shortly after, Blackhawk returned to Spring Lake, his birthplace. There, among his family he died and was buried with his horse and a few other items. His horse would carry him to the Happy Hunting Grounds, and the eagle feathers from his head would help his spirit soar. Blackhawk had made his war and in the end had made his peace. With a fitting story at this time of peace and goodwill towards all mankind - portrayed in the story of a young warrior who so fiercely loved this land we now call home. Fireside chats with eggnog or warm apple cider, carolers at your door, a yule log crackling on the hearth, stockings on the mantle, the mystery of old St. Nick fitting down the chimney, or gifts clustered around a handsomely trimmed tree? As Christmastime approaches, Carrolls words from his poem, Christmas Greeting from a Fairy to a Child, reflect the essence of the Christmas season, which is supposed d in the hearts and to linger minds of peoples everywhere, yet which, by many, is too soon forgotten after the holidays: Peace on earth, good-wi- ll to men! This is a very broad definition t and includes everything from arguing with your family, to noise, to difficulties at work, to illness, and J soon. Stress is essentially the adjustment demand placed on a person. Mild stress actually improves the performance and efficiency of the person, but severe stress tends to impair or impede performance and effectiveness. It also must be remembered that the level of stress, and its effects depend heavily on the persons individual perception of the stressful event. This then suggests that a moderate level of stress is necessary and desirable for optimum personal functioning, and that the level of stress considered optimal varies with each individual according to his or her own perception.
