Show Eaae 4 SunNews Section D. December 22. 1993 Bake a bit of family history this holiday season 4 1- - The holiday season naturally evokes a sense of nostalgia and memories of holidays past. Scenes, aromas, even the music of childhood celebrations, come together every December as they are woven into the fabric of new traditions. For many families, the holi-dajust wouldnt be the same with- out cookies like Grandma used to make. All the better if Grandma or another relative can join in and share the story behind the recipe. Be it a cookie, cake or bread, baking together is z wonderful way to learn about family holiday rituals. The American Dairy Association and Rena Coyle, author of My First Baking Book offer this recipe to start your family baking. Spicy, iflrr - ys I! chewy, buttery-moi- st Grandmas Spice Cookies seem like they came right out of an heirloom cookie jar. They are great with a tall, cold glass of milk - and are just the kind Santa would like to find waiting for him on his annual visit. Grandmas Spice Cookies Makes about 3 dozen cookies Cookies: cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 3-- 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. ground cloves 12 tsp. ground allspice 14 tsp. salt 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 34 cup molasses 1 egg I've Been Real Good! This time of year finds boys and girls sharing their heart's desire with Santa Claus. This scene was captured at the Winter Wonderland in Salina. Santa made several stops during the month of December. Makes you wonder how he gets all the shopping done! Glaze: 1 cup confectioners sugar 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. grated lemon peel Preheat oven to 350. For cookies, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and salt; set aside. Cream butter and sugar in large mixer bowl until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg; blend well. Gradually add flour mixture; mix well. Drop by heaping tablespoons about 2 inches apart onto unuttered, foil lined cookie sheets. Bake 13 to 14 minutes or until set. Let cook on cookie sheets for 5 minutes. Remove cookies from foil, transfer to wire racks. Cool completely. For lemon glaze, whisk ingredients together until smooth. If too thin, add a little more confectioners sugar 1 tablespoon at a time. Drizzle cookies with glaze. Allow glaze to dry before packing cookies in airtight Teen Stress Check When teens feel too much stress, they may develop health problems or turn to drugs.
