Show r i I 7 The. SunNews. Tiiesrlgy. December 24. 1991 Have a Joyful Christmas Things could be better for the turkey industry Ron Nielsen, Administrator Richfield Care Center At our last Family Council meeting (we have a special each month for all families of the Care Center residents), we invited our consulting sociologist to talk about how to deal with the holidays. He reminded us that for many people Christmastime and the holidays are very traumatic, and sometimes cause severe depression. I, for one, have a problem with that because of the great joy I experience at this very special time of the year. Perhaps more than any other season, more people, especially at Christmas reflect on the blessing our Savior has brought to us and feel the real joy of life and living. Can you think of anytime, unless its Easter, when you get the feeling of love for your fellowmen and love for life? That love brings Christmas joy. Joy to the World resounds at Christmastime. I love Christmas. I love the way I feel about others and the feeling of love others share with me. At the Care Center, I see more people coming to visit than at any other time. Those visits bring joy to the residents, and a special glow of joy and fulfillment to those who come to visit. Some visit out of duty, but at Christmastime, most visits seem to be for the season. The season of true love and joy in giving of self. The best time of the year is upon us. The lime of Christmas joy. May you find that special joy in your heart. May you feel that the true love of Christ so that the joy of Christmas may resound from you to lift you and to lift all those around you. Have a very joyful Christmas. er Says Moroni Feed Official All isnt as well as it could be in the turkey business, according to Joe Nielson, general manager of the Moroni Feed Turkey Plant. Nielson noted that there several turkey growers who have gone under this year - and more are nearing the danger point. He added that the 96 members of the organization have raised 4.6 million pounds of turkey this year, adding that most will get back their production costs. Paybacks on dividends which the company withholds against such tight limes, will likely help sustain them until the next prosperous year. Turkey consumption has more than doubled in the last 15 years, to almost 20 pounds per person per year. Nielson says he blames the economic woes of the turkey producers on the excess of supply over demand as well as the recession. One drawback for the Norbest corporation, the parent company of Moroni Feeds Ephraim and Salina plants, was this fall when an Oregon processing plant which also uses the Norbest label had to recall much of its product from the market due to tainted flesh resulting from undercooking. Even though products from the Utah area were not involved, people still returned the Norbest product. It was disastrous, according to Donald Shand, a Moroni Feed board member. The primary market for the Moroni Feed product is the West Coast. As a result, transportation costs are a factor in the economic condition of the organization. At the height of this years production season, nearly 1,000 people were employed at the Moroni Feed plants, with an annual payroll of $10 million. Tired of the rush, the strain on the pocketbook, the activities, programs, parties, and tired of hearing the Christmas carols over and over again. But not me. I wish the spirit of Christmas could be with us all year long. One of the best parts of Christmas for me is that our thoughts turn to family and friends. Were often too busy making a living to spend much time with our families. And I like the pleasant feeling of serenity and fulfillment that comes from taking the time to do something special for a neighbor or friend. The spirit of the Christmas season is that of loving and giving. Not bad qualities to include in our lives all year round. There are also valuable lessons to be learned during the holidays. It takes practice sometimes to be one who can receive graciously - and realize that no matter what the gift - the giver was thinking of us with love as it was presented. Its a time to remember that not everyone is happy during this holiday season. Death of loved ones, illness, divorce, hard times can make. the hplidays a very lonely. time for someThey need pur help to mhke it through wfi'afotnerwise woufd be a very trying time. Memories are made by the ton during the holidays - and most of the time they are good ones. When you think of it - all we are today, is wrapped up in our memories of the past. Dreams for the future are wonderful to think about - but only what we have actually experienced can be added to our Memory. Its sort of like roses in the snow. We cant grow roses at this time of the year in our neck of the woods - but we can remember them, and if we try hard enough we may even catch a hint of their delicate fragrance before the memory fades. Its also a time when the kid hidden in each of us - can surface for at least a few brief moments. -- 0- .y $9.95 Call Now For Reservations 528-769- 0 the period, we are fairly diligent in keeping them watered. This is of course, an important practice from a safety standpoint also. A dry tree is much more of a fire hazard than one that is still moving water through its leaves. Some people like to get the tree out of the house the day after Christmas. Others who enjoy the atmosphere it lends, keep it up until the New Years holiday has passed. After having been cut for a month or more, the tree will not take as much water as before, and therefore will tend to dry out more. We need to be more cautious about leaving the lights on now. Dont leave a lit tree for long periods of time, especially if you are leaving the house. as Nearly every home boasts a Christmas tree in the window. It seems this year that everyone has gone all out to make this a spectacular Christmas, with all kinds of beautiful decorations on houses and yards. We ve officially welcomed Winter and are once again on our way to Spring. Surely, storms lie ahead. Each will add its own measure to the snowbanks on the hill. But, when you think of it, home feels even more snug and secure when Winter walks around the outside. Enjoy the season. Be thankful for the scent of pine; the aroma of cookies & other goodies coming from the kitchen; neighbors and friends. Try to see this Christmas as if for the first time - listen to the Christmas story with the same rapture and awe as you did as a child. Look at the stars on Christmas Eve and try to imagine how bright the Christmas star must have been to have guided the Magi from foreign lands to the place of Christs birth. Try to feel the excitement the shepherds must have felt when a heavenly messenger told them the good tidings as angel choirs filled the air with song. Consider Marys emotion as she tenderly cradled the Savior of the world in her arms. Remember, too, that the promise of the Holy Child remains with us ...He who believeth on me today - I go to prepare a place for you... shall never die. Take heart at the promise and be assured that one day there will be no pain, no heartache, no loneliness - only Joy. May your Christmas be a happy one. r L Help your Pre-Tee- n When you take the tree out of the house there are choices to make about what to do with it. If it is out on the curb at the right time, it can be hauled away. That is preferable to just throwing it out the front door to lay in the yard like junk for the rest of the winter. Some areas have a Christmas tree recycling service which runs the trees though a chipper and then sells the chips or composts them. You might think of standing the tree up in the garden for a place for birds to perch. If you tie some suet in the tree the birds will really love it. This is the last reminder of a garden class to begin in January. The first meeting will begin at 7 p.m. January 9, in the Extension conference room. Bring a friend.
