Show I M E, ie. J'' x .. t Home and School: Vital Links by LILY ESKELSEN President, Utah Education Association The television and I have a classic love-hat- e relationship. Some time back, I seriously contemplated a divorce from the TV, but I realized that it would probably get custody of my children. So Ive learned to cope. My family has gone through countless evolutions in our relationships with the networks. We didnt have a television in the early years. It was a radical concept, but my husband and I read aloud to each other for the first two years of our marriage. Later, we allowed Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers into our home. Still later, we tried to limit boobtubing to two hours a day, then to programs of which parents had prior approval, and even to paying for television time with minutes of reading. Currently, were doing the whine until your parents give in method. My children find it most effective. One thing I have done, however, is to force myself to sometimes sit and watch some inane show with my children. Using even these shows as lessons is an art form. Im getting rather good. Whos the smart-alec- k kid whos so rude to everyone? What do you think Id do if you talked to me that way? They turn the laugh track on whenever she makes a joke about her fat friend. And the friend laughs, too. How do you think her friend really feels? The detective is breaking into that office to get evidence. In real life, he wouldnt be able to use that evidence in court. See that policeman shooting into the crowd as the bad man escapes. Would a real policeman do that? Even with reasonable rules for television, your kids are still going to choose some pretty dumb things to watch. Learn to live with it, but also, learn to use such shows to teach your children to be critical viewers -- - not victims of the networks vast wasteland. Medical Alert Reyes Syndrome from School Nurse -- Jurene Hovinga Warning occur in this order: relentless or continuous vomiting listlessness drowsiness personality change such as irritability slurred speech sensitivity to touch disorientation or confusion With the onset of winter, the flu season begins and parents are reminded to avoid the use of aspirin or medications containing aspirin in treating children under the age of 19. Jurene Hovinga, Sevier School District school nurse, said Reyes Syndrome is a very serious disease children may develop as a result of using aspirin to relive symptoms of simple ailments like chicken pox, upper respiratory infection, or other fever causing illnesses. It usually affects people from infancy through but no age group young adult-hoois immune. The Surgeon General, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Reyes Syndrome Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control recommend that aspirin and combination products containing aspirin should not be taken by anyone under 19 years old during g illnesses. can develop Syndrome Reyes three to five days after the onset of other illnesses. It affects the liver and and brain, is is often mis diagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, poisoning, drug overdose, or sudden infant death. Typically, it occurs when someone is recovering from a viral illness and begins to feel better. The project was begun last March - and will save the hospital 30 to 35 percent on their annual heating and cooling costs. Also present at the Open House were members of the Utah Department of Energy, engineers, and Utah Power and Light - as they have supported the project -- - the first of its kind in a hospital setting ultil-mate- ly in the state of Utah. The system is a heat pump system, but rather than using outside air as the source for heat and the dissipation of heat from the air inside the hospital - 5000 linear feet of pipe, of which 200 feet is underground - circulates in a closed system a fluid that is used to help heat and cool. The alochol and water in the system comes into the building at about 5 1 degrees. In the heating mode, three to four degrees of heat is extracted from the fluid and then magnified in a compressed atmosphere to a temperature used to heat the building. In the air conditioning mode the heat in the air inside the hospital is absorbed into the fluid mixture and then dispersed into the ground as the fluid circulates into the ground pipeline. An extensive amount of duct work was installed in the hospital to provide for a return air system and a filtering system. The return air vents and filters allow the air to be recycled - thus saving on heat- - ing and cooling costs. It also allows for certain rooms to be pressurized to keep unwanted air out - or if an isolation was necessary, the air in that room could be recycled within itself, and not be mixed with other air in the hospital. All involved in the project felt it went smoothly and is now doing the job that was promised. This is the first commercial application of this type of ground transfer heat pump system in a hospital. Aspirin, a part of the salicylate family of medicines, may also be labeled on a medicine bottle as acetylsalicylate, acetylsalicylic acid, salicylic acid, or salicylate. You had your parent-teachconference some time ago, but now your child seems to be having a problem in school. Should you call the teacher? Or should you say nothing and hope for the best? Most teachers say they want to know whats going on in their students lives. Chances are if youve noticed a problem, your childs teacher has likely observed it too. By working together you may be able to come up with a solution that is right for your child. Many times a telephone call can provide the communication you and the teacher need. One of the basic definition changes is that the school year will be defined as 990 hours - rather than 180 days. Ware also referred to questions on membership, dropout determination, student identification, tracking and variances. The Board expressed concern of the impact this proposal could have on the ongoing school program and its effects on school funding. It was decided to fax a letter to the State office the next day, prior to the State Board of Education Meeting. Realignment for Utah High Schools is planned for 1993. Lynn McArthur, a representative of the Utah High Schools Activities As sociation, sent a survey regarding the plan. The present base number for students is 550 for a 2A classification. The survey asked if the number should be changed to 575 or 600. The Board suggested a base of 600 could help develop four leagues in a 2A division, and could eliminate a lot of travel to and from activities. The Board decided to return the survey approving the 600 pupil limit for a 2A school. Sam Ware told the Board that the district is in dire need of copiers throughout the district. He said financial concerns exist regarding copying needs. Many copiers are worn out, and maintenance costs, supplies and materials costs are far exceeding available budget resources. A meeting has been set for Janu- ary 6, with two representatives from each school in the district to discuss, study, and analyze needs, and move toward formulation of a copier program to satisfy needs within budget allowances. The Board approved the changes in staffing of North Sevier High School. Recommendations will be effective next school year. Principal Will Jolley reported that Ashman Elementary has 530 students enrolled, with 17.5 full time teachers. Student attendance is He added that 97 of 96. parents came to ParentTeacher Conferences. Jolley said the fifth grade tested at the 55th percentile on the SAT, and third grade tested in the 40th percentile range with math at the 70th percentile. He attributed this to good teaching and the assistance of the WICAT lab. He noted that language, reading and spelling, however, need improvement and plans are being implemented to improve these areas. ; classes open to the public The public is invited to register for Utah State University classes which will be held at the Central Utah Correction Facility, in Gunnison, in the Administration area.
