Show 11 The Salina Sun News. Mar. 21. 1090 Think about giving the gift of life to others - donate organs The evening of March 7, 1985, a thin, weak 16 year old boy and his mother arrived at the Salt Lake airport from their home in Caldwell, Idaho. Tony Shephard, suffering incurable heart disease, could barely breathe. He needed assistance just to walk. During the early morning hours of the next day, March 8, Tony became the first patient of the Utah Cardiac Transplant Program, when surgeons carefully removed his own diseased heart and replaced it with a new one donated only hours earlier by a grieving family somewhere in America. Today, Tony Shepard is a happy, active 21 year old; leading a normal life except for his once a year trip to Utah for a check of his transplanted heart I feel good, great! I have no problems, Tony said recently. The young bachelor works as a truck driver and delivery man for a food service company. Im also in to four snowmobiling, wheeling and auto racing, he added. Since that day five years ago, 278 other patients have received new hearts through the program, which is a joint operation of University and LDS Hospitals and the Salt Lake Veterans Administration Medical Center. 9 1 of those who have received heart transplants through the Utah program are alive one year later, and more than 80 percent lead useful, productive lives five years after their transplants, according to a program spokesperson. Utah transplant recipients have ranged from children as young as 7 years old to retired persons as old as 68. The introduction of the antirejection drug cyclosporine in 1985 made the tremendous increase in transplants possible. All heart transplant recipients must take the drug for the rest of their lives at a cost of between $8,000 and $10,000 a year. Research continues into new and different anti rejection drugs. A heart transplant costs between $125,000 and $150,000 in Utah, however more and more insurance policies area covering the expenses. Still, many of the recipients must rely on family, friends and community fund raising activities to help cover the cost The Central Utah area was called upon to help with the expenses for a Salina Man, Dali Dimick who received his new heart earlier this year. Dimicks family continues to thank the many people who have - and continue to contribute towards the expenses incurred when his life was saved as he received a donor heart The major problem of the program continues to be the shortage of donor organs.
