Show 4 Salina Sun VWtJ , Aunt j OPINION : School SAT's dont tell entire story NS High Timothy SMilh, Principal of North Sevier, noted thit he at pleased with the overall performance of the high school students in the recent SAT testing. Sevier County School District graphs had shown that students in grades 1 through 8 performed while higher thsn expectations, students from the fhh through 12th grades were below the expected levels. However, Smith noted that many things enter into the high school scoring. He explained that every student in the school is tested. The and Special Education students there are about 30 at North Sevier High are tested along with the rest of the student body. Therefore, according to Smith, a student who places high l.e. 13.0, and a student in Special Ed who places in the 5th grade level, average out to a score on the 9th grade level. It does not show the true picture of the progress of the majority of our students," he said. Smith noted that beginning with the ninth grade year, students are faced with much more outside activity football, basketball, wrestling, track, baseball, for example. These and other extracurricular activities take much of their time and emphasis, and make time spent with the books often set at a minimum. Letters to the Editor ore encour- aged and welcome. All letters must be signed. Names will be withheld upon request. Next j cat's planned program to pul all extracurricular activities after school hours may help to some degree, however travel time to games, meets, etc., during school hours will likely not change much. Smith said that plana are under consideration that would set budget limitations on how much each school could spend for travel time for its students. Once the budgeted funds were used up, there would be no more travel to any outside see. On TV its tough to smart off its Tough to say nobody can make me do that if I dont want to.' TV screens are filled with murders, rapes, dishonesty, nearly 34 hours a day and it can't help but influence the behavior of our kids," Smith said. The influence of the home la aleo a key factor in a student's behavior and progress at school. Smith said. Sometimes w hen a parent is called in on a problem, we find that the homelife supports a different type of behavior and therefore the student carries out the same type of behavior in the schools. Smith said that scoring on the SAT tesla was as follows for NS High students: (figures are an average of the entire class) events. We have some great positive things going on in our high school," said Smith, but too often all wt hear is the negative side." We have students that are excelling in almost all of their subjects. We have the top math student in the slate, we have those that are doing great in business, FFA, music and other fields, but they dont get into the limelight as often as the negative happenings at the school," Smith 9ih Grade scoring was 8.3 8th grade 3rd month; 9.4. ninth grade 4th 10th grade month; 11th grade 10.8, tenth grade, Olh month; 12th grade 11.7, 11th grade 7th month. Smith noted that in some areas, the students scored much above the national levels, for example, the Seniors rated 13.0 in Math, h the 20 categories of the testing, Seniors were above national average in 20 categories, and below the norm in only 5 categories. said. The high school is always in the public eye. Were a melting pot.' Yes, like most other schools, we do have somewhat of a discipline but I problem," Smith agreed, don't feel this is entirely the fault of the school." "Yes, teachers need to command and demand respect, so that they can do their job Teach. After earning the necessary awards and advancements, seven of us local bike enthusiasts left a cold, blizzardly white Salina for the tropics of southern Utah. There were two basic rules set down for the young bikeists. Number one is that you always travel with another member of the group. The second was to always wear a helmet. If you were caught without the helmet, the riding privileges would be taken away. These two rules were questioned, and even though not understood fully by the younger generation, the ; consequences were such that they chose the lesser of the two evils and abided by the rules. It was not long before a seasoned biker from Colorado was brought into the camp with the aid of eight men. He had been riding, all alone, had an accident which almost took his life. Before he was hurriedly transported to the hospital in Moab, one of my scouts was explaining to another that he had been hurt so badly because he hadnt been following the ruies. This made me think a little. Now that I am in city government and to a certain extent help make the rules of this community, of what value are rules and laws? To these scouts, the reality of what could happen if you broke the rules became a learned exNox matter how unperience. manly or uncomfortable the wearing of a helmet was, that was the first thing they put on after the accident. The audacity of having to wear a helmet because of a dumb rule made up, of course, by an adult, was forgotten. The rule became a good one. What about the 55 mph law? Child restraint and seat belt laws? Inspection laws? I realize that all laws are not for the good of man or at least for the good of all people, but the majority are made in good faith to protect and preserve the rights of the majority. The next time you are at odds with a present law and you feel it should be changed, let your city fathers know of your concern. It will either be like the helmet rule g effects could be where reversed, or maybe it could be one that needs better wording or updating for the community in which you live. life-lon- Conscience is what makes kids tell their parents what theyll probably find out anyway. Gossip can demoralize a community faster than cancer can destroy a body. It is a sad state of mind when a community feasts and lusts after the misfortunes of others, even to the point of their destruction. To date I know of no one who does not have some skeleton hidden deep in their closet, which time and good living will most of the time change or dissolve. The best we can offer to ourselves and to others is forgiveness when it is earned and the chance for a better life in the future. Being positive is self perpetuating. Smile a little. Say hello to everyone you meet, even if you dont know them, and see the difference it makes not only to the people you left standing on the street trying to figure out if they knew you, nor only to yourself and how you will try to find the good in people rather than the bad. A teacher may appeal the evaluation if not satisfied. Teachers are given points for areas on the evaluation. Teacher points are then turned into the District office, where the money available is divided among the teachers according to the points they have amassed. Supt. Tuft emphasized that the Career Ladder program is for teachers only. Principals and other administrators are not involved in it One resident told the group that taxes are too high now, and noted that the school system has changed. Free public schools are not free these days. He suggested a possible solution would be to have those who have children in school pay most of the expenses. If you want big families, then he you pay for their education, said. Mrs. Jackson urged that anyone having suggestions, ideas, or problems, write the School Board, or call them at their Richfield Office. the opportunity to earn a profit during the six month period. That amount is estimated at about $1 million.
