Show BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah 10- - Thursday, January 8, 1976 Face Sky View Friday Bees pull upset, hand Warriors first defeat It was not a good night for Weber. But Tuesdays Region One cage confrontation with the Warriors was oh so sweet for Box Elder's belabored Bees. Yep, the Hivers won it in a squeaker, It was the first league win for and the the local lads, now s initial loss for Coach Dick kids who dropped to This hoop hoedown was not your usual brand. Each team tried to outdo the other in turnovers. And Box lead Elder blew a nine-poigoing down to the wire. But the Bees on this occasion were clearly the better bunch and looked absolutely brilliant at times. Had their shooting sights been more finely tuned in, they could really have blown it open in the second half. What a climax this encounter offered. And how jubilant senior forward Steve Nowak was in the wake of it all. It was the courtier who bounced up among a bevy of basketeers to tip in the 56-5- Con-oily- 6-- 2 winning basket at the final buzzer. ' Quick Start The Hivers who can never be faulted for lack of trying, were up for this one and got away tp a quick start, netting their first three shots from the field. Weber snapped back to grab the lead for brief spells and were up by one at halftime, But Coach Tom Stewarts guys forged ahead in the third period never to trail again. In other Region One action Tuesday, Bear River kept its record unblemished with a 1 homecourt victory over Logan 34-3- 47-4- and Sky View took a overtime win from Roy on the Royals floor. They all get back at it again Friday with Box Elder traveling to Sky View, Bonneville hosting Roy and Weber entertaining Logan. Bear River draws the weeks bye. Against Weber, the Bees went to the fast break more than in recent outings and displayed much movement on offense. Their board work was tenacious and their shooting fair. Only in the turnover department did they really fall short. 60-5- 9 Own Mistakes But on this occasion, particularly in the second half, Weber reciprocated with their own mistakes to keep that situation balance. The Warriors had a horrid time shooting. And you could credit Box Elders aggressive zone defense for holding the field visitors to five second-hal- f goals. Coach Conolly figured the defense was too aggressive and had uncomplimentary words for the games officials. The statistics tell the story. The last two teams whove come in here have ended up getting 40 foul pitches. We had two officials tonight who let it go, he stated One play in particular that had the Weber mentor angered was a controversial decision with 12 seconds left in the game. With the score knotted at Box Elder had possession Scott Corry took at the throw-in- , a Weber defender made a lunge for the ball, Corry hit the floor writhing in pain from a reinjured right foot ana it appeared that one official had called a jump ball. However, when play resumed, Box Elder was given the ball out of bounds. Conolly was trying to figure that one out. Shaw with 16, Rulon Jones with 12 and James Shaw with 10 It was a screamer, Box Elder appeared to have matters well in hand with two minutes left to play and leading They went into a control game, Weber pressured some turnovers, found the range and Frank Shaw knotted the count at with a pair of free throws with 26 seconds on the clock. 54-4- points. In the junior varsity opener, Box Elder edged the Warriors, in the final moments of play with Roy Huntsman netting 13 points, Wynn Hall with 11 and David Wilding with 10 points, as 13 men shared in the scoring. The box score: 70-6- 54-a- ll Not Sure Coach Stewart wasnt sure what the call was although he thought a jump ball had been signalled. He also believed that Corry was fouled on the play. At any rate, when the clock started again, Wade Hall took the ball, drove for a baseline jump shot. The casaba took a right angle turn off the hoop and d it back Nowak up to settle softly in the net. Best in Scoring Best in scoring for the Bees was Brent Walker, the junior who tanked 17 points and turned in his finest game of the season. Others in double digits were Corry with 13 and Alan Asay with 12 points. Best for Weber were Frank finger-touche- in post-gam- e. 54-5- mid-cour- t.
