The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources released has descriptions of redhead and canvasbacks ducks that seem to cause the most trouble in identification. The similarity of the two species has, in the past, resulted in hunters leaving birds to waste on the marsh, rather than take a chance of leaving the area with the wrong species, according to the DWR. Since only one canvasback can be taken in possession, it is important the bird be properly identified before being downed. Redhead regulations are a bit less stringent, allowing two in the bag and four in possession. To help alleviate confusion, the following guidelines are set forth to aid hunters in Canvasback redheads and canvasbacks, both in flight and Elwood unit sets in the hand! Both Divers 3-d- Both redheads and canvasbacks are in a group of ducks known as divers, as distinguished from puddle ducks. Therefore, they have certain similar characteristics, including, placement of legs more toward the rear of the body than puddle ducks; hind toes with lobes; and pattering along the surface of the water for some distance before becoming airborne. Both ducks fly in irregular patterns, with a rapid, noisy wing beat. The most noticeable difference between the birds is the ay bird hunt Tickets for the Elwood pheasant hunting unit will be on sale at the Elwood Ward chapel on Oct. 29, 7 to 9 p.ni. Canvasbacks have a long, sloping forehead with a completely black bill of the same length as the birds head. The long head gives the bird a front-heav- y look, especially since the head is carried in a downward curved posture. It is a longer, more slender bird than the redhead, and is somewhat larger. The top of the back is almost totally white on males. Most of Utahs canvasbacks are found in Box Elder county in the vicinity of the Bear River Refuge. The redhead has a puffy, dome shaped head, and a bill that is shorter than that of the canvasback. It is best described as being half as wide as it is long. The bill is a pale, bluish color near the face with a whitish ring bordering ths black tip. The body is more rounaea than that of the canvasback and it is smaller. The bird is darker than the canvasbacks, and the top of the back on males is gray. Wide wings The wandering albatross has the longest but narrowest wing of any bird.
