Show BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, March 1, 1973 . buddy: "Hey Mac, the fish and game guys are hitching up the team again today ... guess we'll get to see a whole mess of crazy human beings them. Since I will soon be returning home I would ask that you would discontinue sending them. 1 "Quit your complaining Joe ... you're getting free room and Editor: The other day this writer and his family took a trip up to Hardware Ranch to see the elk. The kids hadn't seen 'em and we figured they would enjoy it. Needless to say the wife and I were all excited about the whole thing. The kids liked it, but thought walking through the mud was a little more fun. Anyway it's a fun trip and every family should take it at least once a season. However, my daughter insulted one of the elk. The animal pushed her out of the way to get some hay and she said, ''Bug off Elk.'' My apologies Mr. Elk. As we were sitting there felt as though we were the one's on display. Picture it like this: One elk yawning as he gets up in the morning and calls over to a Monday evening our family had planned an activity night of bowling. I called the local bowling alley to inquire if it was open to family bowling that night. I was informed by the owner that it was an did I know each person was required to bowl a minimum of three games. When I asked him the reason for this he said, it was to make money and that people couldnt expect them to work up there for nothing. He went on to say if the city was subsidizing them they would not have to do this. I was also told that when people come in to bowl only one or two games it was tying up their alleys. (This was quite a surprise as the few times I have been there there were only four or five lanes in use.) I told him it seemed to me he was doing himself more harm than good and that this is a typical attitude of some Brigham City businessmen and merchants. Instead of trying to be competitive, they just complain because the people wont patronize them and then, as in the case of the bowling alley, hold their hands out for a subsidy. He said I was typical of Brigham City people; they wont put themselves out to try and help him make a living. He then said I would not be allowed to go out on the golf course and play two holes of golf for 30 cents. I feel there is no comparison to two holes of golf and something less than three complete games of bowling. By the same token I do not expect to be required to purchase a minimum amount of commodities before I can shop in a -- management." "I wonder if they give those type degrees at Editor: News-Journ- I Museum-Galler- y This action by the city council directing the health department and the public works director to install and control fluoridation was tested in the popular referendum of 1965 and failed to carry due to its misleading working. Therefore Brigham City had the authority to go ahead with its fluoridation operation under the legal and moral commitment of the cited council motion. As you may know, we no longer have either a city health department or a public works director. In an council action of the Brigham city council unanimously gave authorization to run and control fluoridation to Mr. Howard B. Kelly. Now then, inasmuch as fluoridation was launched as a public health measure under the auspices of the Brigham City Board of Health, the principal control was correctly entrusted in the above council motion to the city Brigham City no longer operates its own city health department, as stated, and the sanitary control in Brigham City has now been turned over to the Bear River Health office local at the courthouse). department (with The latter politely but firmly declined to have anything to do with any operation, supervision, control, etc. of the citys fluoridation operation. The question now arises as to whether Brigham City has the legal or moral right to continue operating this fluoridation system under the sole control of Mr. Kelly. I personally opine that this is stretching any city councils powers to bit too far when they can just get together at a council meeting and emasculate the legal basis of the operation of the states sole fluoridation system by replacing due dual control of operation by the sole control of just one man. We are not in Russia by any chance, are we? Editor: Tri-Coun- ty If a dog is a mans best friend, some one in Brigham sure needs no enemies. Twice this week I have had a wounded dog left at my residence. The first one was hit by a car and put in our ditch or crawled there to either die or hopefully, be found by some small child to sadden their hearts. These people know who they are. A few days later in the middle of the night, a car or truck pulled in my driveway and left a small puppy with a mangled leg. I found it under a flower bush when I went out to feed the cats. I called for the pound master but it was Saturday and he didnt work that day so I took it to the police station and they agreed with me how cruel some people can be. It had to be put away by the pound keeper. Please have a heart, dog haters, and dont leave me any more. I hope you like children better than you do dogs. ui. II iOO TM WaNfcalacht 0. I love you. Christensen, Sincerely yours, 95 North Chairman TO FIT In-C- Fri.-Sat.-S- public plan to open up an area for parking between Main and First East and south from the courthouse to First South. We recognize the parking problem is not simple. There are the employees who arrive in the morning and leave in the early evening. Where can they park? Can space be found for them in a neighboring block? How many spaces would that leave for customers, and would it solve the problem for a few years or permanently? How fast is Brigham downtown area going to grow? These factors, no doubt, have been duly considered. A parking area is now present in the rear of the J.C. Knudson property south to the newly acquired bank property. If there is a parking problem, it is one for the property owners to the north. It can reasonably be assumed that this is a private owners problem who should be required to furnish their own parking area to help themselves, rather than to expect others to give it to them at the expense of both individual and community values. Parking space for themselves could be provided without sacrificing the old Knudson home and its immediate surroundings which is threatened. This beautiful old home represents a type of architecture which has all but disappeared and should not be sacrificed to the insatiable ambition of a few politicians! 1. health department. A major factor in the success of the program was the part your newspaper played in providing excellent articles and information for the Brigham area residents. We are particularly appreciative of the fine article with the picture of W. Cleon Skousen which was run on the front page of your Feb. 15 edition. 3 Thanks again, Elder Gary H.
