Show BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Play Final Loop Games Brigham City, Utah Thursday, October 19, J972 liftfle Leaguers Turn Brigham Citys Little League gridders wound up their regular season Saturday. Three of the teams immediately turned their n attention to glory, taking aim at playoff opponents to decide who will play in the bowl game for the championship of the Wasatch Front. The 120A's, unbeaten and the champs of the North division, were scheduled to play East post-seaso- division leader Roy on Wed- nesday afternoon. The victor will play the Syracuse- - Layton matchup for bowl honors. The lOOAs, champions of the North division in their weight class, were to meet South Ogden for the bowl spot. The other division winners were Layton and Bountiful. Meanwhile the Brigham 8SA team in the North division tied Bear River for the lead when Brigham's other 8SA club upset Bear River Saturday. Brigham and Bear River were to play off to see which team would represent the division. Only the A teams vie for bowl honors, but another Brigham City team, the 70C team in the North division, swept through their season undefeated. Beat South Ogden In their final contest of the season, the lOOBs wiped out South Ogden, 34-as Craig Grover scored on touchdown runs of 35, 50, and 60 years. Grovers first run put Brigham ahead in the first quarter, and Kyle Arbon tallied the point after. It was Grover again on a reverse, and Keith Marshall ran in the extra point. A gallop by Grover set up a second quarter score by Kyle Arbon from the line. Ed Munson added the extra point on a pass from Keith Sayama. Grover hot his third TD on the first series of the second half. It was Marshall again for the extra point. Sayama passed to Doyal Russell for the final BC touchdown. Good blocking keyed the Brigham offense. Clearing the way were Dee Korth, Marley Hamblin, Kevin Butler, Rod Law, Doug Hazelton, Kevin Enright, Mike Woodard, Ellis Wood, Ladd Walker, Eddie Pendleton, Munson, Russell, Marshall, Grover, Arbon, and Sayama. The rugged defense allowed South Ogden across the line only once all game. Top defenders were Jim Boyd, Terry Horne, Mike Smoot, Mike Johnson, Doug Calloway, Doug Nelson, Craig Archibald, Ron Webster, Clayton Anderson, Norman Higgs, Niel Harper, and Chuck Merritt. Morris added an extra point to give Brigham a 27-- lead. Bear River connected on a scoring pass of their own just before the half to make it 27-Grey got the final score for Brigham in the fourth quarter on a run. Lyons scored the point after. The offense got plenty of blocking from Chris Williams, Lane Veasques, Brett Wallace, Dan Hammon, Kevin DeFrtez, Eric Epperson, K.C. Webster, and Garth Smith. Leading the defense were Gray, with 14 tackles, Kelly Christoffersen with nine, and Adams with eight. Webster intercepted a pass and Doug Snyder recovered a Bear River fumble. It was their fifth win against a pair of defeats. 0 well-playe- two-yar- d r, Upset Bear River The 85A (West) team upset previously unbeat Bear River, 12-to create a first-plac-e tie between d Bear River and Brigham's other 85A team in the North division. Both teams scored in the second quarter, but Bear River fashioned a slim 6 lead on the strength of the extra point. Brigham's score came on an end sweep by Dan Eskelsen for held. Outstanding on defense were Lynn Merritt, Greg Wilson, Andy Yates, Grant Aston, Jack Langley, Ray Etsitty, Justin Norman, and Brian Semon. Final Game The 70Bs (East) traveled to Smithfield for their final game of the season and met a hard running, blocking, and tackling outfit that whipped them, Smithfield had to work for their score and needed a break after the BC youngsters held them for three downs on the line. On fourth down, Smithfield fumbled and the loose football ended up in the end zone, where Smithfield covered it for the touchdown. It was Brighams third loss against three wins and a tie. yards. The 70Bs tangled with Bear River and neither team could cross the goal line. The offense was led by the line play of the Roundy's Millard Hazelton, Andreason, Tuft, Whitehead, Larson, Excellent Punt Returns Excellent punt returns by Hardman twice put Brigham in scoring position. A touchdown by Cary Henrie was called back. The final TD was a Statue of Liberty with Danny Hendricks Duran, Erickson, Marshall, Burridge, Smith, Yeager, Yates, and Tarkalson. The defense racked up their fourth straight shutout as the play of Dan Parkinson, John Mason, Pat Munson, Keith Taylor, and Charles Vogt stopped the Ogden attack cold. The Weber State football team travels te Flagstaff, Ariz., this Saturday (Oct. 21) for a Big Sky conference football game with Northern Arizona university. The Wildcats and Lumberjacks will be battling to stay in the upper division of the league standings. Last year in Ogden, Weber State managed a 23-- 7 victory; but this season the Lumberjacks are expected to be more explosive than in 1971.
