Show ' f go-- ' Brigham City, Utah 27, 1970 August Thursday, BOX ELDER JOURNAL, To Conserve Water, Land 17 Soil District, SCS Join Hands for More Projects Farmers in South Box Elder Soil Conservation district and the local Soil Conservation service have joined hands on several projects in recent months. The activity represents a continuing partnership between the landowners and federal agency which provides technical assistance for conservation measures. For example, Roy Lemon at Willard this past May installed more than 500 feet on concrete irrigation pipe which he said Tuesday has been a real asset to his operation. In fact, hes so pleased that he plans to extend the line another 400 feet next year and may even develop a pond for fishing and water storage on his property. Saves Water What factors have influenced him most? The savings in water and the elimination of open ditches. Standing at the terminal point of his covered line, Lemon looked to the west and observed that he found difficulty getting the stream flow to a lower pasture. The porous ground simply drank too much of it en route. Thats the part he plans to tile next Take stock in America Whereas before, the ground was boggy and hardly suitable for any use, it now stands firm to the foot and can be developed as good pasture land, explained Don Braithwaite, SCS unit conservationist. The teenagers participating in the program have been discussing ways to improve the effectiveness of young people in campaigns as well as ways to increase their own organizations in their local areas. The TARS put their practical political knowledge to use one afternoon by canvassing several precincts in residential Stockton. In addition to taking part in organizational seminars, the TARS, coming from California, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and Oregon, heard speakers including Republican U.S. Congressmen Donald D. Buz Lukens of Ohio and Pete McClosky of California. 8 4 Elder-Webe- two-inc- h year. Further south in Willard area, Norris Hubbard this past spring installed about 1,100 feet of tile drain. Braithwaite explained that previously, irrigation water eroded soil at the lower end of the orchard. Liability to Asset However, the new pipe collects this water and delivers into a nearby gravel pit in which Cragun has planted additional fruit trees, converting a liability into an asset. Although not a soil district cooperator, the LDS Ben Lomond South Stake farm in south Willard recently converted to sprinkler system on its orchard ground. Jesse Holden, manager, said they run four lines and complete a watering every 11 days, drawing from the Highline canal. The town of Perry and local farmer Norman McCoy cooperated on a concrete pipe project which has corrected a troublesome storm water problem. It was that water would gush down a gutter on the town parks north side, flow over a street and then sweep down a lane, carrying sediment into a field below. The water now is funneled into an underground line which serves also to carry McCoys irrigation water, and eventually is dumped into Walker pond. There were seven structures Included in the project.
