Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, DECEMBER 22, 1976 IS With Unity Uilies Arc Definite Contender For Region Title By DAVE WIGHAM The standard question that this reporter was asked time and time again was that if Viewmont had so much talent and were considered to be so good why do they keep losing their games? SINCE THE Vikes knocked off both Murray and Orem last week the questions have been few and far between. Probably what most people faile d to realize that this was a young group of varisty players that the Vikes were putting on the floor. Between them they probably didnt have a full game of varsity experience between them. And believe me theres a big different between junior varsity and varisty. THEN TOO, consider the type of teams they have been n playing in their campaign; you name one of the top teams in the state and the Vikes have played them, at least once, some twice. So now that the young Vikes are used to playing varsity ball, and used to each other and the Jim Cleverly style of ball the results are victories pre-seaso- Under construction on Fort Lane in Layton is the second of 5 or 6 The first is finished and occupied by a dentist, real estate company, insurance counselor, and mortgage and loan office. NEW OFFICE SPACE ONE OF the biggest improvements of late has been the play of senior Kevin Chet Walker. All along the Viking coaches have been saying that Walker has the talent to score 20 points a ball game if hed decide to do it. Last week he decided to do Jl II If youre tired of If a team is winning then they have good talent, but if a team is losing, they have a rotten coach. For the past two years the Darts have been in the state chanpionship game, why, everyone will tell you it was great talent. This year the Darts are struggling and theres probably someone out there reading this article that is blaming coaching for the downfall. about What the two previous years, did coaching have anything to do with their success? I know it did. So why then do we blame the coach when things go bad. IT STRUCK me funny the other day as I was talking to a coach, this is one of the few jobs where there is alot of criticism and very little praise. Starts Sat Dec. Probably the main reason graduate for their recent success II the coach be the target if things are going wrong. A coach can only install the fundamentals in his players; if his players dont have the ability to perform those tasks, does this mean then that the coach is bad? As much as some of us dont want to admit it, there are some years where certain high schools dont have the talent to compete with their opponents. Other years there is an abundance of talent. In my eyes this has something to do with the success of a team. A REPORTER would get his head taken off if he ever wrote that, for example, this years Dart team didnt have the talent it has had in the past. Parents would say that we were saying their kids' dont know how to play the game. But you find me one of those parents who would admit that this years team tiful; you tell me they have the same talent that was at the school when they took state. THERE IS talent at the its unfair to the players and the coaches to compare the teams of yesterday with todays. Yet they are supposed to win all the time. A college coaching situation is different; the coach has some say in who plays, but in high school the coaches have to utilize what he is given. He cant go out and recruit a big center or quick guard. schools, but then, BASICALLY the coaches should get some of the credit along with all of the blame for their efforts.
