The campground, which is known as the Virgin River Canyon Recreation Site, was opened to the public on February 28, 1977, and is located at the Cedar Pockets interchange on MS, 20 miles southwest of St. George, Utah. It contains 0 BcO sS ihz-- - : rife 115 individual family units and three spacious restrooms with flush toilets and wash basins. The site was built by Halec Construction Company of Flagstaff, Arizona at a cost of $500,000. According to Garth Colton, Arizona Strip District Manager, the family units have been designed to provide for the needs of large motor homes, trailers, or pickup campers. Part of the units are the pull-thrtype which are to accommodate the trailers and mobile homes. The other units are the spur type which necessitate backing in or out; these units are for the pickup campers. Mr. Colton points out that an attractive feature of the campground is the interpretive facility located on a small hill near the campground entrance. A marked trail leads to the facility which has combined a rock masonry sitting wall with interpretive plaques mounted on the wall. The interpretive ' u tell displays about the geology of the Virgin Canyon, a major division line between the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau. On one of the plaques, it is learned that the Virgin Canyon has been a thoroughfare for mankind for 10,000 issued Federally permit gives a 50 percent reduction to persons over the age of 65 is honored at the campground. Holders of the Golden Age Passport need only pay $1.00 and indicate on the fee envelope their permit number.
