"We played catch-umost of the game, but the kids never let their mistakes get them down, and they kept coming back until they finally took the lead late in the third period and once they got in front Intermountain could never get in front again. They are a determined bunch of kids, and by we are going to be one team, tough Stringham concludhard-earne- d with Wendover producing four kids in double figures, led by Cory Melville and Bodie Peebles with 16 points each. Tooele Drops On the dark side of the picture is Tooeles second loss of the young basketball season, a decision to Bear River. On the bright side of the picture is a lot of encouraging paints for the Buffs to work with. Even though Tooele lost, the players cut down the number of turnovers, they ran their patterns better, their shooting showed improvement, there was a big change for the better in the Buffs attitude and confidence and in general Tooele played a much better game than they did against Ben Lo57-4- 3 mond. The Buffs are a game and aggressive crew and even though Tooele trailed throughout the contest, sometimes by as much as 19 points, they never quit coming back, and it took the best that Bear River had to make the Buffs holler "Uncle. Tooele goes to Box Elder Dec. 3, and will return home Saturday, Dec. 4 for a game against highly-toute- d Lehi. It took both teams the better part of the first period to get warmed up, with BR jumping out in front before Tim Norton canned two fielders from in close and Cline hit one foul shot to get Tooele close at at the end of the first period. 9-- Herrera Heads for Hoop 2 9-- 7 BRs flashy and talented guard, Dan Summers, led a BR charge in the second period that saw the Bears increase their lead to 24-1- 6 at the end of the second period. Summers kept up his scoring in the third period, with a big assist from Brent Roberts and it looked like BR was home free with a fat 44-2- 5 lead going into the final period. It was here that BR went to the bench, followed by Tooeles rally, and a return of the BR regulars to the floor. Tim Norton played a great defensive game for Tooele, blocking rera with 12. Coach Steve Larson went to his bench early and often throughout the contest as he seeks to find the most effective combination. Dar- ryl Doutre was impressive during the time he was in the game, and Dean Fitrzpatrick also played well for the Buffs. Boy Swimmers Win 77-3- 8, and the boys team finished on top 74-5in a good tune-u- p before tackling powerful Provo today. A year ago during the state tournament Tooele and Provos boys freestyle relay teams staged a terrific battle for the state championship with Tooele pulling an upset, beating the Bulldogs by a very narrow margin in what was classed as the most exciting race of the championship meet. From that one race has developed a terrific rivalry, with Provo anxious to prove that Tooeles win was a fluke, and Tooele anxious to firmly establish its position as the best in the state. Provo and Tooele lost just one swimmer off the relay teams of a year ago, and should the coaches decide to go with the same line-uThursdays finale should be just as close and p exciting. Provo has most of its team back from the boys squad that finished third in the state a year ago, while the Provo girls squad can look to individual champions in five events still swimming for the green and white. Tooele Coach Mel Roberts states that this will be the toughest test for the Buffs so far this year, and maybe the toughest during the entire dual meet season. Boys Getting Stronger Tooeles boys team captured se ( f Girls Win 74-5- 3, ven of the 11 events, pulling off first and second place finishes in five of them to gain its impressive victory over Granger. After the first five events, Granger had a two point lead in the team scoring, but Tooele won five of the final six races, includfinishes in four of ing them to win going away. Top performers for Tooele were Stuart Smith with wins in the 200 IM, butterfly and a leg on the winning freestyle relay team, good for 12 points; Jim (Hacksaw) Hartley with a win in the 100 free, a second in the 50 and a leg on the free relay team for a total of 10 points and freshman Larry Seals with a win in the 200 free, a second in the 100 free and a leg on the free relay team and a total of 10 points. finishes came Tooeles in the 200 individual medley with Cob Hildebrand finishing second to Smith, the 100 fly, where Vaughn Royle finished second to Smith, in the 100 free with Hartley and Seals waging a great batone-tw- o one-tw- o tle before Hartley out-touche- d Seals. Kent Lawrence and Charlie in the 100 Royle finished one-twback. The 100 breast was won by o Hildebrand and Bryce Rimington finishing second. Two big surprises in the boys competition, one good and one bad. The bad, Terry Griffith, Tooeles promising sophomore and had to diver had an settle for third place In the diving off-da- y 77-3- 8 competition. Griffith usually scores more than 200 points, but against Granger his score was a mediocre 179. In the internal battle being waged between sophomore Kip Hammond and freshman Dale Nielson, Nielson outscored Hammond for the first time as this young pair continue to show improvement off the springboard. The good surprise was the strong second place finish of Vaughn Royle in the 100 yard butterfly. Royle, a sophomore, is improving by leaps and bounds and will no doubt be a big point getter from the Buffs from here on out. Holts Win Two Each The girls third straight win came against an undermanned Granger team, that possessed quality but not quantity. Granger came up with wins in the 200 medley relay, the 200 yard free, the 500 yard free and the breaststroke, but fell before the strength of Tooele. The Holt sisters, senior cocaptain Cindy and freshman Kris each won two events and swam on the winning freestyle relay team to lead the girls with 12 points all-arou- each. . Cindy won the individual medley and the fly, with Kris easily winning both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Jill Barney continues to drop her times, and was a big winner in the backstroke. Kaelyn Keele, who is fast devel- oping into a I champion-calibe- r diver, won the diving competition, followed by team mate Connie Shields and freshman, Michelle Alldredge.
