Show Public notice THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - Page 16 REQUEST The hazards of horses hind the other horses. He took charge, shoved past the other by Doris Valle I need to upgrade my activity level. When I go to a din- riders, and headed home, ner party I have to sit quietly and listen to the stories my friends have to tell, but I cant think of a single exciting thing Ive done lately. True, I seem to be involved with people who are younger than me. But I hadnt realized I was that Bill and Kathy tell blood curdling stories about four wheel- Chris, talks about thrilling horseback rides. I sit contemplating possibilities of activities which would be exciting without being hazardous to my health. I know better than to roar off into the distance four wheeling - I can get into trouble driving on a normal road meant for cars. Mountain biking? Ugh. I grew up in the country and have never in my life been astride any kind of bike. I get tired walking up a slight slope. Horseback riding? Ilmin. Thats a possibility. After all, I was a country girl in the days when I was a girl. I dont like to consider how long ago that was. But there was a horse on the farm and I could climb up on something and get the bridle in her mouth and over her head and then lead her to a tree stump which served as a mounting block. I couldnt lift a saddle but I didnt need one. I rode that dumb horse over a lot of Texas miles. Then I lived in cities and never said hello to a horse again until I was living in Mexican Hat. One neighbor -Clyde - planned a tourist attraction. He had horses and he was going to put up a sign and cars would stop and people would get out and go for a ride - a Cowboy and Indian experience without the Indians. In the process of establishing a trail in the area, he needed riders on whom he could experiment. Preferably tenderfoot riders. I qualified. Ill give you Big Red. Hes so gentle and comfortable to ride youll think youre in a rocking chair. I'll ride with you to lead and a couple of other guys will be there to help you if you need help, Clyde said. That horse was named Big Red because he was a very, very big horse. I needed help before I even got off the ground. This business of throwing ones leg over the horse and leaping into the saddle is not my, forte. But Clyde lifted me into the saddle, put my feet into the stirrups, and we were off. On the way out, Big Red was content to amble along behind everyone else. However, I was immediately aware that my horse knew that I was not the one running things. He was. And on the way back to the barn he got bored riding be I again. Still, I had been able to ride a horse, bareback, all over the countryside, in the dear dead much older. ing up and down cliff sides. Chris supplies details of a mountain bike race over a mountain he just survived. Nancy, who is married to - kalump. lost the out of the reins, my feet slipped I over and leaned stirrups, just and hung on. So okay. It was all right. I survived. Clyde did not ask for my assistance kalump days beyond recall. Nancy had three horses and each was gentle as a baby lamb. So she said. She would take me on a nice, gentle, slow ride. I contemplated the possibility. Then this morning I got an from Nancy. I quote: I had a little accident yesterday. Just a wee one. Susan and I went riding up in the mountains. All was well until Susans horse decided he was not going back in the horse trailerO. He really meant it. For two hours we talked, cried, begged and did everything suggested in my horse management manuals, to no avail. We were without food, water, a cell phone, or any other resource and were on the verge of leaving the stubborn SOB in the mountains when some horsey male friends drove by. I think Susans horse is a male chauvinist because he went into the trailer without a moments hesitation when a couple of guys took charge. By this time I was really tired and rattled so I just threw my horse, Keillor, into the trailer without ropes or anything. Not a good move. We got back to my house all right but then I started to unload the horses. I was backing Susans horse out of the trailer - I assumed he knew how to back. As soon as one little hoof realized there was no solid ground beneath it that horse lunged forward, pinning me inside the trailer. Then Keillor got upset and turned himself into a pretzel, wedging all of us. Luckily, Chris was in the yard and came running when started screaming. About that time Keillor assessed the 1 situation, turned himself into a spaghetti horse, and was able to squirm free of the horseNancy pile up although I was still pinned against the trailer side. Chris led Keillor out and the bad horse meekly followed when he heard a mans voice. At this point my legs were tired of holding me up so I just sat down on the floor of the trailer and did a survey of body parts. So far as I can tell, the damage is limited to a couple of sore ribs... Nancy, I have lost my interest in horseback riding. I think I will just walk the five blocks to the post office. Im pretty good at telling stories. Surely I can make a five block walk - anyway its ten blocks when you count the return trip - between my house and the post office sound like an exciting adventure.
