Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday. August 25, 2004 - Page 14 More cougars will probably be taken during hunt Deer herds that are struggling in Utah should receive help after the Utah Wildlife Board approved changes that could result in more cougars being taken by hunters in different areas of the state. The board, which consists of seven citizens appointed by former Governor Mike Leavitt, approved the rules at an August 12 meeting. Before mak- ing their decision, board members considered recommendations from Division of Wildlife Resources biologists, citizens representing Utah's five Regional Advisory Coun- cils and members of the public who attended the meeting. Last season, hunters took 426 cougars in Utah, below the 475 to 500 cougars the Division of Wildlife Resources had projected might be taken and two fewer than the 428 cougars taken the season before. Under rules approved by the board, the DWR is projecting that 500 cougars might taken in be tab this season, LI which begins in late November on some units. Most of the increased take would happen in southwestern Utah, where deer herds are struggling. The drought has really impacted the deer herds here, f to be taken is established. There is no limit on the number of hunting permits that can be sold for these units but once the quota is met, the hunt on the unit is shut down for the rest of the season. Last years quota was 482 cougars. About 65 percent of the quota is actually reached each season, so this years quota of 527 could result in about 344 cougars being taken on these units. Approved 263 permits for 20 limited entry units. A limited number of permits are available for these units. Hunters who draw a permit for a unit are allowed to hunt that unit until they take a cougar or the season closes. Last season, a total of 244 permits were offered for limited entry units. About 60 percent of the hunters who obtain a limited entry permit are suc- the annual growth on the plants the deer rely on in the winter, and we dont have the summer vegetation that many of the nursing does need to produce enough milk for their fawns. On top of that is predation by cougars. Sorenson says the ratio of fawns to does in the Southern Region last fall was 54 fawns per 100 doc's, 'flu1 overall number of deer on the regions units ranges from 75 percent to less than 25 percent of the number calk'd for in plans. We re doing several habitat projects to improve the habitat the best wo can. but we need some relief from the drought to really see habitat conditions improve, Sorenson said. One thing we can do for tin deer right now is allow additional cougars to be taken. Once the deer herds bounce back, we can cut back on the number of cougars that are taken and allow cougar numbers to also grow.
