UNDC officials have been in contact with Dr. Jacob Mittleider, originator of a gardening method which has been used with spectacular success throughout the world in such countries as New Guinea, Africa, India, Latin America and the U.S.A. Mittleider is an international lecturer and consultant from Loma Linda University in California. ms gardening techniques are derived from almost 40 years of research that have taken certain aspects of organic, conventional and hydroponic gardening and combined them intoasucces-f- ul method that produces abundant crops with limited space and poor soil conditions. Mettleider has written several books which provide instruction in setting up grow boxes filled with eight inches of soil composed of sawdust, sand and basic chemicals required to grow the plants. The grow-boxusually five by thirty feet in dimension, boast an almost weed-frenvironment, says Mittleider, and can double and, in some cases, triple production. According to UNDC officials, a demonstration project is underway at Halchita, Utah, where training will be provided to a small group of assistants. Dr. Mittleider and his assistant Ira Packer will live near the project step-by-st- ep es, ee where 20 grow-box- es will be con- structed along with 30 growing beds without boxes. CETA workers and UNDC personnel will assist Dr. Mittleider in the construction of the boxes. TTiey will continue to work toth gether on the project until It concludes in the fall. Mittleider says virtually every kind of produce can be grown in the boxes, including vegetables and melons of higher quality and better flavor than those produced with traditional compost and manure methods. He says the Mittleider Method has been proven in terrain and locations as diverse as the island of Okinawa and the jungles of New Guinea. The Reservation, he says, will offer its own unique challenges, but he looks forward to working with the Navajo people, who, he says, can produce gardens with a higher yield with the same proven methods. According to UNDC Assistant Worthy Glover, funds are presently being sought to expand the le training project to a to assist local Navajos program in learning Mittleiders gardening techniques. Mittleider has conducted similar programs in Africa, where took students their skills into their own communities and raised high-yie- ld gardens on land that previously was capable of only poor to modest results. Mittleider contends the same principles can be applied to the Navajo Reservation with equally four-mon- Monticello Box 41 ' - v;4.-?- 7 . is the world's most arid continent.
