To defer income, consider 1) Investing in Treasury Bills or shortterm C.D.s that mature in 1982 rather than in instruments that will produce 1981 interest income. 2) If you sell something, defer income to 1982 or later by using the installment sale method, or consider delaying the sale until 1982. 3) Dont take bonuses until 1982. 4) If youre an owner of a closely held corporation, postpone interest and dividend payments to yourself until 1982. To accelerate your deductions into 1981, consider 1) Paying as many deductible expenses as possible in 1981 such as state and local income taxes, real estate taxes, sales tax on large purchases, professional dues, purchases of business tools, uniforms, and business publications. 2) Increase your charitable contributions - possibly accelerating two or more years into 1981. 3) If your medical and dental expenses are large enough to be deductible, pay as many additional medical bills as possible. 4) Use your credit card to pay deductible expenses in 1981 and make the payment to the credit card company in 1982. If your 1981 tax bracket will be lower than you 1982 bracket, even with the tax cut, deferring income and accelerating deductions is not the tax strategy for you.
