By The Rev. Canon H. B. Liebler Let us now speak of trivia of trivialities. (Not that our past musings have been of great importance!) Now, any- knows what trivialities are. You dont even need to have started high school Latin to know that: tri- - is a prefix meaning three, as in body trigonometry, tripod and, well you name it. Nothing to it. So also with -- via. You get to Bluff via Blanding or to Price via Moab. It obviously means way or road. So trivial has to do with three ways. Simple, isnt it? Until some smart aleck speaks up and says But trivial doesnt mean three ways, it means something unimportant. Thats the trouble with triangle, the smart guys. They always think of something obvious. Well, do you remember how hard we worked to get gossip out of God-sior scuttlebutt out of a ships supply b? A public meeting to discuss the preliminary plans of the project is scheduled at the Salt Palace, Little Theatre, in Salt Lake City, on June 25, 1974 at 7:30 p.m. and also at the Legion Hall in Green River, Utah on June 26, 1974 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is - have on this hard worked really problem, and as far as Ive been able to find out, the nearest they have come is to the effect that where three ways, or roads, meet, is a gathering place (like the scuttle-but- t) for people to talk over unimportant things. Its a long time since I stopped at such and listened to a cross-roa- d the talk, but I dont remember the talk being any more trirs vial than at a or even a straight piece of road. You figure it out! So, whats a hamburger? Or The first a cheese-burgeis easy. ..hes a citizen of a ham (hamlet), or town, a burg. At some time in the history of butcherism, probably some citizen of Ham invented the idea of chopping beef to disguise its toughness, and lo! a word was born. Then some less than brilliant person thought of adding cheese, and you get a citizen of the town of cheese as the name of a sandwich. What about sandwich? Legend has it that an Earl of Sandwich was so devoted to billiards that he couldnt be bothered to go to lunch, and had two slices of bread with meat or fish in between brought to him. Take it or leave it. Did you ever get a letter signed waxlessly yours? Of four-corne- l -- l l l 1 1 x l course thats what sincere Sin - sine, without, and cere is wax. Hamlet, you may remember, spoke to his fathers ghost as one who had - meanburst his cere-men- ts the cloth waxed used to ing enshroud bodies. But how did sincere come to mean what we mean by it? The most probably answer comes from the trade of the potter: it is said that dishonest potters covered cracks in their ceramics (get that cer?) with wax, consequently, a sincere piece of pottery was one without imperfection.
