Show School Talk By Kenneth B. Maughan Supt., San Juan School District The San Juan Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday, June 10. The meeting began at approximately 9:45 a.m. and adjourned at 6:30 p.m. All Board members were present and President Harold Lyman conducted the meeting. After approving the minutes, the Board proceeded to discuss the items on the prepared agenda. The Board discussed activity buses and instructed the Superintendent to make arrangements to sell the two Greyhound buses inasmuch as it is extremely difficult to keep the buses in operating condition. Other alternatives for providing activity buses are being investigated. A quotation from Southern Paving Company was discussed regarding blacktop at several of the schools in the district. The Board instructed the Superintendent to proceed with the completion of this project. school personnel traveling on official school business will be reimbursed 14$ per mile and when out of the district $2.50 per' meal or $8.00 per day. In the past the district has not provided complete medical coverage for all teachers who are not considered heads of the family. However, as a of the negotiations, wrap-u- p the Board will now provide complete medical coverage for all professional employees and their families. Inasmuch as the state has informed the district that it may not have a state bid for gasoline this year, the Board instructed the Superintendent to make the arrangements to Beginning July 1 bid the gasoline on a local basis in August. The Board approved a request from San Juan High School to conduct a basketball camp this summer. A1 Blankenship, manager of the School Transportation Company, met with the Board and gave a progress report and answered any questions regarding the transportation system. The Board expressed satisfaction with the system and the Superintendent will provide a report to the public sometime after July 1. Lyle Wright, director of the study to determine the advisability of additional secon- dary facilities in the district, met with the Board to cuss the progress and dis- direc- tion of this study. As part of this study, the Board appointed an advisory committee consisting of nine citizens Inthroughout the county. vitations to serve on this committee have been extended to these individuals. Mr. Wright will present another progress report at the July 15 special school board meeting. Donald Jack, Administrative Assistant in charge of Elementary Education, met with the Board and discussed a proposal which would study the bilingualbicultural program within the district, and, depending upon the outcome of this study, could result in the implementation of such a program. The Board appointed an advisory committee and invitations have been sent out. It will contain laws, regulations, and policy relating to the district. Dr. Percy Burrup from Brigham Young University is directing the project. Invitations were sent to Eddie Toledo, Head Start Director, and John Stash, Chairman for the Policy Advisory Committee, to meet with the Board and discuss the Head Start Program. Inasmuch as neither one of these individuals showed up, the Board discussed the recent action of the Parent Advisory Committee in which the committee voted to take the Head Start Program away from the School District and give it to the Utah Navajo Development Council. The Community Action Program in Price has honored this request and as such has notified the School District that next year the Head Start Program would be operated under the jurisdiction and supervision of the UNDC. The Board approved four change orders amounting to $4,855 for the School at Bluff and the Vocational Center. Maughan Superintendent presented a tentative budget and after reviewing and dis- cussing the budget, the Board set June 27 at 5:30 p.m. for the budget hearing. The Board also set July 15 at 1:30 p.m. for the time to meet with legal representatives from the Native American Rights to discuss the progress that is being made in the areas of concern expressed for this organization. 25 Years For Former Priest At St. Josephs The parishonersofOur Lady of Lourdes Church, Magna, are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Father Kaisers ordination to the priesthood, on Sunday, June 16. Father will celebrate Mass at 12 noon. In February, 1954, Father was assigned to St. Josephs Utah. Monticello, Parish, While serving there St. Pius X Parish in Moab was established and the church was built. He served as first pas- tor. After six years in Sout- heastern Utah, serving the Catholic people in Monticello, Moab, Blanding, Bluff, Mexican Hat and LaSal, he was transferred to Our Lady of Guadalupe at Christmas time 1959 and was administrator there for nine years. |
