Show Former Rlnndingite honored John P. Redd, better known as Jack, was recently named the University of Utah and received his B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering in 1959. While in college he was named president of the student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. After graduation he worked for the Salt Lake Refinery of Standard Oil until 1961, leaving to work for the Beeline Refining Co. He soon quit that position and he and his brother, Wayne started the Redd and Redd Consulting Engineers. He studied other aspects of the business, determined to become fully qualified in every facet of the new business. Redd and Redd have risen to the top of the engineering profession with projects extending throughout eleven western states and even to New Zealand. Projects have included dormitories for the universities, churches, commercial buildings, schools and service stations. Their crowning achievement, The Salt Palace, is now under construction in Salt Lake City, as the Utah Engineer of the Year in Industry by the Utah Engineering Council. Jack is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland W. Redd of Blanding and graduated from San Juan High School in 1948. The Intermountain Contractor oi March 8 carried several pictures of Jack and a review of his life and work and said "Adaptability, and above all a seemingly insatiable drive to learn and cxcell, have pushed John P. (Jack)Redd to the top of his profession in Utah. " It is interesting to note that wheD Jack flew in to receive his award he came from Wisconsin where he was helping in the presidential campaign for George Romney. Jack was born in Mount Pleasant but grew up in Blanding. After graduation he worked with the Bureau of Reclamation and then worked for the Galli-gh- er Company in Monticello. About this time he and Erma Helquist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Helquist of Blanding, were married. It was in Monticello that he developed his interest in chemistry. Active in community and trade affairs, Jack is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, is past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, belongs to the Salt Lake Rotary Club and the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and has served one term in the Legislature In addition he has written many technical articles for national trade journals. In addition he served four years as Bishop in the LDS Church in Bountiful and is now a member of the South Davis Stake High Council. He is also Assistant District Commissioner of the Lake Shore District of Boy Scouts of America. The Redds have six children ranging in age from three to 18 years.
