Helquist RECORD (This is the first in a series of articles on tuberculosis prepared for The San Juan Record by the Utah Tuberculosis and Health Association as a Christmas Seal service. With the current plans to develop tuberculosis clinics in San Juan County next spring there is need for public understanding, support and participation if the goal of tuberculosis eradication is to be achieved.) Though much progress has been made in reducing tuberculosis incidence in recent decades, San Juan continues to have the highest incidence of the disease in Utah. No other county even comes near the high case rate to be found in Utahs Canyonlands country. During a recent study of the problem, the five year average case rate for San Juan County was 87 new cases of tuberculosis each year per 100,000 population. This compares with less than 10 cases per year for each 100,000 of population for the state of Utah as a whole. Historically, tuberculosis has been recognized since the dawn of recorded history. Evidence of tuberculosis has been found in Egyptian mummies dating as far back as 1,000 B.C. At the turn of the 20th Century, tuberculosis was the leading cause of death in the United States. It was the leading killer in Utah also. That was when the National Tuberculosis Association, the oldest of the voluntary health agencies, dedicated to a specifc group of diseases, was established. The Utah Tuberculosis and Health Association was organized in 1916, for the specific purpose of protecting the public against the spread of tuberculosis.
