To date, six of Megs bones have been prepared for exhibit. The bones include the two pubis and the ilium of the pelvic (hip) structure; a caudal (tail) vertebra; and two metatarsals (foot bones). In addi- tion, the museum has extracted many bone fragments that have not been prepared and even more still are yet to be dug out of the ground. The museum plans a full reconstruction of the skeleton in the near future. Unlike the dinosaurs found at the Cleveland-Lloy- d Quarry, northeast of the find, Meg would not have CEU. According to John Bird, who heads up the museums field this means that finding all of the dinosaurs work, bones is unlikely. Ancient bogs and stream-bed- s are the source of many dinosaurs in the area and why many bones are found in such good condition. When mud surrounds the animal, it quickly seals it off from the environment, allowing the perfect condi tions for preservation. The streambed sandstone in which Meg was found creates a much more difficult task for paleontologist than finds from ancient bogs, according to Bird, because streambeds form a much harder rock. of The importance Megalosaurus lies not only in the history of the earth, but in the history of paleontology as well. It may have been the first ever described to scientific audiences as the animal we now think of as a dinosaur. William Buckland described that find to the Geological Society of Lon ex- don in 1824. Previous finds of dinosaur bones had been published as having belonged to giant humans, as were portrayed in the Bible. The College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum manages nearly sixty quarries throughout southeastern Utah. Meg is the second of new dinosaur finds that the museum has released to the press this year. Other new finds await formal announcement, pending more complete scientific inquiry. Along with dinosaurs like Meg, the museum has dis- , . ' covered nine new species in the last ten years.
