Castle Dale, Utah Visit our Website Tuesday, October 19, 1 er 999 http:main.ehs.emery.kl2.ut.uspubecpecprog.htm The Spartan Page Compiled by the EHS journalism staff Officials to promote awareness of gun laws DALE- - Emery High School administrators and Emery County CASTLE officials are combining efforts to inform the public about existing laws regarding firearms on school property. Recent efforts to establish crisis management policies at the high school have led to a new awareness of both state tand federal laws prohibiting firearms on school grounds. State' statutes obtained at the Emery County Attorneys Office indicate that A person may not possess any dangerous shotgun... weapon, firearm, or sawed-of- f at a place that the person knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is on or about school premises. The law states that such possession of a dangerous weapon... is a class B misdemeanor while possession of a firearm or a sawed-of- f shotgun is a class A misdemeanor. The law applies to weapons on school grounds as well as in school buildings, according to Kelly Alton, Emery High School assistant principal, who added that while there have been few incidents of guns within the school, it is fairly common that guns are brought to school and left in vehicles parked on school grounds. Students and visitors almost routinely have hunting rifles and pistols in their vehicles, he said. Thats been pan of the culture in Emery County, as well as all rural areas in the state, for a long time. Under existing laws, however, such possession of firearms is unlawful, he pointed out. The law does make allowances for properly licensed weapons while allowing concessions for such possession when approved by the responsible school administrator. The assistant principal no'ed that permission may be granted for unloaded or disarmed firearms for purposes of such things as stage props, arts projects or class demonstrations. As a means of educating the public about these laws, especially students attending Emery High School, Emery County Sheriff Lamar Guymon said recently that his office will be issuing warnings to those students who are found in violation of these laws. At the same time, high school officials will rountinely patrol parking areas and will law, said Emery County School Superintendent Kirk Sitterud, who added, We want to do what we can to ensure the safety of our stydents, employees and visitors at our public schools. At the same time, the superintendent said that the expulsion rule may be applied to those students who violate the law. Brent Arnold, Emery High School' violations of the state law, school principal, said that there have been few problems related to weapons at Emery High, but added, We need to be prepared, and our preparation includes a crisis management plan. Within that plan are provisions for dealing with guns on our campus. The principal said that Emery High superintendents are empowered to expel students for up to one year for violations. Were trying hard to let the public know what the consequences are for violating the School will join the Emery County Sheriffs Office and local media outlets in getting information to the public to minimize problems related to these laws. notify local agencies when violations are found. According to Mr. Alton, any vehicle parked on School grounds may be subject to search.
