See page 3B 1 i t By MARTA MURVOSII The Daily Herald A SPANISH FORK CANYON Orangeville man died the afternoon of Oct. 11 when a pickup he was driving sideswiped a semi ld truck. Trever Kevin Tuttle was driving west on U.S. Highway 6 when his 1999 white Ford Ranger crossed over a dotted yellow line into oncoming traffic, said Trooper Marc Nichols of the Utah Highway PatroL James Smithson, 39, of Bisbee, Ariz., was driving a black semi east and wasnt hurt, said Chris Kramer UHP spokesman. The highways east bound side was closed to one lane for about two hours while wreckers cleared the road at mile marker 181, which Is east of the covered bridge, Nichols said. It isnt known why the pickup Tuttle drove crossed into traffic and troopers dont believe that drugs or alcohol are involved, Nichols said. The pickup Tuttle drove was owned by Emery Telephone and the black semi by Horn Beverage in Brundage, Ala. Tuttle lived about 30 miles south of Price. No citations were issued, troopers said. The canyon has become somewhat infamous for the frequency of accidents here. There have been at least three over and another on weekend of Oct. Oct. 8, said Rep. Brad King, The state lawmaker has lobbied to make the road safer by adding passing lanes. It would cost $230 million to expand it to a four-lan- e highway from to Fork Price, Spanish King said. "Its a lot of money," he said. Most transportation money in Utah has been committed for the next four to eight years on Interstate-1- 5 construction, which will cost up to $2 billion. King said. Cydnee sustained serious injuries when she was kicked by a horse on the afternoon of Oct. 5. Cydnees father reports she is doing very well, and happy to be home. She is able to walk, although she is still having problems with her bal ance, and her speech is improving She will be undergoing speech and physical therapy three times a week at Castle View Hospital for the next six months to a year to help with her recovery. recuperate faster; so she may not even have to go for the whole six months. Highway Three more deaths from two weekend accidents By BETTY BAILEY Green River correspondent Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Warren Nelson responded to two separate automobile accidents over a 12 hour period which resulted in three fatalities. The first accident occurred Oct. 15 at approximately 3:30 p.m. on near milepost 108. Charles Ken Carlson, 62 of Pulaski New York, was driving a 1997 Mercury Mount ameer towing a 20 foot travel trailer in the right-han- d westbound lane. Possible cross winds may have caused the trailer to begin fisht ailing, and Carlson lost control of the vehicle. The truck and trailer slid sideways across the travel lanes and flipped onto the drivers side, starting a roll Trooper Nelson stated the vehicle rolled one and a half times before coming to a rest on its top. Carlson Members of the Castle Dale Fire Department cautiously watch a controlled burn in Castle Dale which took place last Wednesday afternoon. The property owners were cleaning up the area for fall burning off weeds, brush and other debris. Projects like this one have been ongoing throughout the county for the past month, but county and city residents need to be aware the burn window closed Oct. 15 and it is illegal to burn past this date. It happens every 15 seconds of every day, and to over one million women in the U.S. each year, Perhaps you are one of the many Women looking for a way out. Or perhaps you grew up in an abusive home. Or just the idea of any person being physically harmed by someone who claims to love her infuriates you. For any of these reasons, you want to make it domestic violence stop. s POOR COPY 1 What is domestic abuse? There are many forms of domestic abuse, ranging from screaming threats to pushing and shoving. Contrary to what many women think, abuse isnt Just physical battering. Domestic abuse may include emotional abuse, economic abuse, sexual abuse, using children, threats, using male privilege, intimidation, isolation and a variety of other behaviors used to maintain fear, intimidation and power In all cultures, the perpetrators are most commonly the men of the family. Nearly one in three adult women experiences at least one physical assault by a partner during adulthood, accordirg to the American Psychological Association in a 1958 report. Domestic abuse does not discrimi nate against race, age and socioeconomic background. No specific type of woman is more prone to being battered by her partner, nor is one type of woman completely safe from abuse.
