Show Tuesday. October 19, 1999 7 A Emery County Progress, Castle Pa!e. Utah Guest Column Letters to the editor Dennis Worwood, USU Extension Agent Now is the time to prepare your garden for winter Fall Is a time of mixed emotions for gardeners. Fresh corn and tomatoes are history, but thankfully, so is the zucchini We might have frost on the windshield, but we dont have to worry about squash bugs. And if the Zinnias are dead, we can take comfort knowing that their Powdery Mildew died with them. Fall is the end of one gardening season, and the beginning of another. Before you commit this years garden to memory, take care of some fall gardening chores that will pay big dividends next spring. Water the lawn and garden while secondary water is available. Add a layer of mulch to shrubs, roses, and perennial flowers in November after the plants are fully dormant. Junipers and other evergreens need another irrigation in January or February, especially if growing next to the south wall of a home. Get a head start on next years veg- ' After mowing the lawn for the final time, winterize the mower. Change the oil, and replace or clean the air filter. Remove caked-ograss clippings from the mower's underside. Check the blade, and sharpen or replace if needed. If feasible, drain the gas tank and run the mower to use up any fuel remaining in the carburetor. Another option is to fill the tank with a mixture of gasoline and fuel stabilizer. Run the mower for a few minutes to move the stabilized fuel into the carburetor. Remove the spark plug and add a drop or two of oil through the spark plug port. You might change the spark plug while youre at it. Dont forget about your sprinkler system. Replace those broken or defective heads you intended to fix all summer. After the secondary system is off, drain sprinkler lines manually if you don't have automatic drains. Leave sprinkler valves open so that water doesn't puddle and freeze in the valves during the winter. There. Won't you sleep better knowing that your garden is reaay for winter? If nothing else, you'll have more time for golf in the spring. and should be burned or disposed of. The same is true for diseased flowers, weeds, and any other plants that have seeds. Fall is the best time to add compost or manure and till the garden. Youll be all set to plant peas and pansies in April. Fruit trees need some help to get ready n for winter. Remove any grass or weeds growing next to tree trunks so that mice wont be able to spend the winter girdling your trees. The trunks of young trees d should be wrapped with tree wraps, or painted with white water-base- d latex paint to protect against winter damage. Spray peaches and other stone fruits with a fungicide containing Daconil Captan, or fixed copper when half of their leaves have dropped to protect against shothole disease. By fall, annual weeds like pigweed, light-colore- kochia, and mallow are loaded with seeds. Remove the plants and dispose of them. Every weed you destroy means etable garden by cleaning up dead hundreds fewer weed seedlings next plants. Most vegetable plants can be spring. October is a good time to spray composted or tilled under. Once again a precious child failed to receive the help he needed to survive. It is time to do something different. Suicide in Utah has risen to al. most one death per day. This is a state tragedy. The Utah Department of health has just released a report about suicide in our state from 1980 to 1996. Utah's suicide rate during 1995 and 1996 was about 3C percent higher than the national rate, placing us number 10 in the country. For unknown reasons, the highest suicide rates are in the intermountain west. Suicide rates in most age groups have been stable during the past decade and a half, but rates for young men age 13 to 21 have increased steadily in Utah and in the U.S. Suicide death rates for young men increased strikingly during the teenage years, reaching a peak at age 20.
