Peer Helpers were also seen on floats in parades throughout Emery County. Just after school started the Peer Helper presidency held a retreat at Sky Haven (out past Millsite) where they planned activities and set goals for the year. Throughout the school year the Peer Helpers are involved in classroom presentations. Once a month they split into pairs and take a lesson to all third through sixth grades in all of the elementary schools in the county. Through these presentations they hope to educate young people and give them alternatives to substance abuse. Other Peer Helpers also work with small groups of seventh and eighth by Maleah Day ECHS The reporter Peer Helpers First term is barely over, but the Peer Helpers have already had a years worth of activities. The Peer Helper Club is made up of students who dedicate their time to helping other students, and peer helping takes a lot of time. Headed by Peer Helper advisor Emery Jones and this years president, Tammy Peacock, the Peer Helpers have been hosting activities since graduation last year. During the summer 18 Peer Helpers from Emery, Moab and East Carbon headed down the Colorado River on a 3 day river run. Those who attended built friendships and participated in peer helping workshops. Also in the summer, seniors Tammy Peacock and Deb Draney took a group of seventh grade girls out on the desert for an overnight camping trip where they partici graders called pre-Pe- er Helpers. -- During Red Ribbon Week a group of sophomore girls visited all of the elementaries i doing a play called Meet Pinocchio Jones. The Peer Helpers are also involved in another play called Love is a Hot Fudge Sundae which they will perform at the junior highs and possibly the Salt Palace. The Peer Helpers have planned many activities to watch for throughout the year, including the traditional graduation party at the end of the school year. A year ago fund raising , efforts began for a flag pole. American Legion Auxiliary Post 42 donated $100, Ferron PTA donated another $100 and the students earned the last third of the cost. Eagle Scout Jeff Wagoner took the installation of the flag pole as a project and together president; Jill Stilson, first vice president; Janet Oveson, second vice president; Deb Draney, secretarytreasurer; Amber Luke, reporter; Jodi Jeffs, senior rep; Michelle Oman, junior rep; and Christ-iann- e Nelson, sophomore rep. Jenny Oveson is the senior and area representative for the Governors Youth Council, Shanna Ward is the junior with his patrol members erected the flag pole last August. Boy Scouts did the representative and Heidi Lemmon is the sophomore representative. Members of the activities committee are: Melinda Judi, Del Funk, work and Cox Rock Products donated the cement for the pad. Spencer Wright, Paula Last Friday, students met at the flag pole and dedicated it by raising and pledging to the flag.
