Show Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 12, 1991 7 A School board receives report on ECHS athletics (Continued from Page 1A) report to the board compared student athletes with student nonathletes in GPA and ACT test scores. Mr. Jeffs said he used report cards from the fourth quarter of the 1990-9- 1 school year although GPA figures were cumulative from ninth grade. His report showed that 213 sport parti- cipants at Emery High had an average GPA of 3.2 while the averge GPA of 393 nonparticipants was 2.7. The student athletes last year had an average ACT score of 22.53 while the nonparticipants averaged 19.28. Also regarding academics, Coach Jeffs noted that in the past five years, 12 students athletes have been valedicto- rians and salutatorians at Emery High. Furthermore, he said that the school requires a athletics into a positive thing rather than cutting it." Coach Jeffs also asked the board to respond to rumors that it is making a concerted effort to get other school districts to join with the Emery District in getting the USHAA to cut back on athletic events. Mr. Curtis said that the board was misinformed about several things, including where funds from state and region tournaments go, who sets the schedules, and the amount of time spent out of school for athletics. However, no one on the board suggested that there was a movement to get other school districts to join an effort to curtail sports. Coach Jeffs said that the region receives the funds from region tournaments and that coaches and region board higher grade point average for eligibility than does the UHSAA Coach Jeffs pointed out that the UHSAA sets the number of games, meets and matches per season for all sports and competitions. He said that number has not changed in 23 years. He also said that the games are set where possible so that students and coaches will not have to be out of school. Most coaches at Emery High have their preparation periods at the end of the day to help reduce the number of class time missed. Academics comes first, he said and then asked, Why cut a program that runs itself, benefits the kids and is positive. Lets use it as a positive, motivational tool. Lets turn Bassmasters host event The Castle Country Bass-maste- rs of Price has announced that it will sponsor a free local Bassmaster BP CastingKids Competition on Saturday, Nov. 30, at Helper Civic Auditorium. The Castle Country is one of 2,500 BASS chapters locally sponsoring this educational, fun and challenging contest developed by the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society and BP, the leading producer of gasoline in the United States and major gaso Bass-maste- rs line, oil and convenience store retailer. Based on the old football punt, pass and kick competition, the Bassmaster BP CastingKids contest will test the basic casting, pitching and flipping skills of boys and girls ages 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. Local prizes include medallions and rods and reels. The young anglers who reach the finals will compete against kids in their own age group for $20,000 in scholarships and prizes. Each competitor will receive a free Bassmaster BP CastingKids Certificate of Competition and a copy of the programs official publication, Bassmaster BP CastingKids magazine. There are no entry fees. The competition begins on the local level where each entrant will be judged on casting, pitching and flipping in official lanes, aiming at the standard Bassmaster BP CastingKids target to ensure competition uniformity. Scoring will be based on a point system with the highest points determining the winner in each of the two age groups. From there, the winners from each local competition will advance to there respective state competitions and then on' to a national;, competition, where only 10 national semifinalists will earn the right to attend the BASS Masters Classic in August 1992 and compete for the two titles of National Bassmaster BP CastingKids Champion. Orangeville stayed with the passing game, but Ferrons secondary of Bishop, Jeremy Gee, Bassett and Ryan Anderson did a good job of defending. An interception by Bishop in 30-ya- rd the fourth quarter further fired up Ferrons team and stopped Orangevilles drive. On Ferrons next drive, Parrish broke loose for a gain. Orangeville then went to the bomb. Two very long passes were tipped by Bassett to break up the plays to end Orangevilles hopes of scoring. Board member Royd Hatt said he is concerned with activities on school nights, and board member Nelson said that if the school had the facilities, games could be consolidated into fewer nights during the week. However, Coach Jeffs said that such consolidation would cut into gate receipts and hurt the budgets of the programs. Tom Roush, board member, expressed concerns regarding the impact on kids who arent in athletics or who dont travel to games but who remain in school and may be without proper instructors. He asked if it is true that seven coaches teachers are out of school when the football team travels. Coach Jeffs said that only four teachers are affected by football travel, and Coach Jim Jones of the football team said that in the 1991 season he missed just three hours of class time. The emphasis in our region scheduling meetings has been in cutting down on the time out of school, Coach Jeffs said. n Board member Marie asked about distributing gate receipts amongst all of d the programs, saying that many of those who attend the events requiring an entry fee do so not to watch the game but to watch their kids participate in the band, cheerleading or drill team. To that, Coach Jeffs said that only one coach or advisor in the high school is in favor of such distribution. He said Guy-mo- victory. Other highlights in Ferrons win included a pass reception by Justin Gee for an eight yard gain. Also, Ferrons offensive line did an excellent job of allowing the backs to execute the plays. The line players were Cory Worwood, Steven Jensen, Clint Pitch-fort- h and other previously mentioned. Special teams and backup personnel were running back Ryan Copatch, Dustin Taylor, Andy Jensen, Nick Wadley, Nolan Behunin, who had two interceptions during the season, Wes Wright, Nathan Jenkins, Ryan Christianson and Justin Jenkins. I believe the Bassmaster BP CastingKids program has many wonderful benefits, stated Castle Country Chapter President Howell. In addition to Terry learning more about fishing, the contest will also foster in each participant an appreciation and concern for our great outdoors while he or she is having fun.
