Show 4A Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 12, 1991 PERSPECTIVE Surviving the trauma offire The following essay is the winner in a contest first-plac- e a fire prevention plan. We sad- ran away from me. I told him ly shook our heads no. He told us to get one because Kevin would have been just fine if we would have had a plan. The doctor told us 65 percent of Kevins body was burned. My Mom started to cry as if Kevin were dead. The doctor told us that Kevin was gofiig to be all right, and we were relieved. That week my Mom spent most of her week in the hospital with Kevin. One night my Mother came home crying. We asked her what was wrong. In a sobbing voice, she told, us that Kevin wouldnt be able to come home for another month. We all hugged each other and went to bed. That night I had a dream about Kevin. He was calling my name. He said, Kristy, Help Kristy. I woke up crying. My Mom and Dad heard me and came running in. They asked me what was wrong, and I told them that I had a dream about Kevin. My Mom gave me a kiss on the forehead to come back. By this time the doorway to get upstairs was blocked off. I kept yelling for Kevin, but he wouldnt answer. I looked around; the whole room was up in flames. I ran out my back door. I ran and ran until I got to my neighbors house. I told them what had happened. Mrs. Larson called the fire department. Mr. Larson came back with me to help find Kevin. By the time we got back to the house, the upstairs had caught on fire. We waited for the fire department to get there. They went in and found my brother, and they put him in an ambulance. Right then my parents drove up. I was scared. I didnt know what to tell them, but Mr. Larson told them everything. My Mom started to cry. She thought Kevin was dead. We rushed to the hospital to see how Kevin was doing. We talked to the doctor to see if Kevin was going to be all right. The doctor asked us if we had spon- sored by the Ferron Fire Department during Fire Prevention Week Oct. by Heather Huntsman It was a Monday night when we had the accident. My Mom and Dad went to a meeting so just Kevin and I were home. It was winter, so we couldnt go outside, so we stayed in and watched TV. As we. watched television, we could hear the coal and firewood pop inside the fireplace. We turned off the television because it got boring. We started to play tag. I was first, so I started to run after Kevin. I almost tagged him when I heard the crash. I ran into the TV room and saw a large piece of coal that had fallen from the fireplace. The carpet and drapes were on fire. I didnt know what to do, so I just held my breath, then I just screamed. Kevin came running. He saw the fire and - and told me to think of good things. The next morning, I woke up hearing music. I got out of bed and went into the kitchen. My Mom was dancing with my Dad. They looked so happy. I asked why they were so happy, and they told me that Kevin was about to come home that night. Then we all started to dance. That night when Kevin came home, we came up with a fire prevention plan. We never had another fire in our home. The doctor told us Kevins accident was a close call. We knew now that if there was another fire our prevention plan would help us, and we would be safe. When a home burns, it can be replaced. With a fire prevention plan, you wont have to replace your family. Heather is the daughter of Mike and Camille Huntsman of Ferron and a student at San Rafael Junior High. Preparing for a home fire The following essay is the winner in a contest sponsored by the Ferron Fire Department during Fire Prevention Week Oct. second-plac- e by Gavin Huntington Where I live, in almost every room there is a window that you can easily get out of. Even in the bathroom, you could get out of the window really easy. The only room you couldnt get out of is our fruit room. The fruit room is a room that has shelves, and on those shelves we have food, tools and almost everything we need. In my big brothers room, there are two windows, so if one is stuck, he can go to the other one. My room is like that too. So if there was a fire, my family could get out pretty stuff in the fire easily. We have fire alarms too, so if we have a fire in the night, we will hear the fire alarm and be able to get out. Our fire alarms are little, round things that you can put on the ceiling or on a wall or just about anywhere you can find. We have testers on our fire them alarms, so we can ' tsf and make sure the battery is still good. Ive got a lot of things that I wouldnt want to lose in a fire like my fish tank and fish and all of my jet models. I am really into jets. Ive got 10 models. But what is most important to me is my family. I would leave all of my all except my family. If we had a fire, I would try my hardest just to get my family out and get the fire department there as quickly as possible and maybe if I do that, I wouldnt lose most of my stuff in a fire. I am really glad that we have fire departments so many people wont lose so much stuff. If we, or anyone else, has a fire, I hope the fire department can help save their homes, but most of all, I just hope the people can get out of their house. My grandmas house burnt down when she went to Salt Lake, and the wind was blowing so the fire department had a real hard time getting the fire stopped. I remember the fire. It was scary watching the house bum down and the firemen doing everything that they could for my grandmas house. We were all glad that my grandma wasnt home when that happened or she might have gotten caught in the fire because she is a really old lady. If everyone had a good escape ,planJr hardly anyone would get huri in afire. People need to be redy for a fire and get out of their homes in case of one. Kicky was the sweetest thing. He went to sleep in a flash; but the other kids were a diffemt story. As I chased Jenny outside, James and Julie tried to surprise me with lunch. They had good intentions, but fires not a thing to play with. I finally caught up with Jenny and placed her on the front room floor to play with her blocks. I sneaked a peek at Kicky, who was smiling in his dinosaur preparation ana Com- puter Business Building in Price. The USAS office was forced to relocate when increased staff for the State Division of History expanded office space needs. USAS President Margene Hackney explained that the request to vacate the office did not give them sufficient time to find suitable office space in Salt Lake or Provo. CEU Prehistoric Museum Curator, Don Burge, offered non-prof- it third-plac- winner in a contest sponsored by the Ferron Fire Department during Fire Prevention Week baby-sittin- Jenny and sleep. Then I walked into the kitchen to see the twins. They had the pots on the floor, but since they liked to play with them, I wasnt worried. I was about to suggest that they draw when out of the corner of my eye I saw Jenny stumble out the door. I caught her and carried her to her room, where she fell asleep. I sighed, and then walked downstairs. I was met by heat near the kitchen, and suddenly scared, I kicked open the door. FIRE! I looked for the twins; they werent there. There was nothing to put it out with, no baking soda or a fire extinguisher. It looked like some grease had fallen onto the gas stove, which the twins must have turned on. The fire was already creeping across the wall. I had to get the kids outside. I raced upstairs, calling for the kids. I grabbed Kicky out of his room first, because he was closest Jenny was awake, and I took her hand and hurried her out the door, holding Kicky, who woke up crying. Call 911, I told her, and I went in the house again to get James and Julie. I searched everywhere, calling for them. No answer came, and now I couldnt get into the tion for Ferron resident Huntington resident reported a possible burglary. Report was taken. Castle Dale resident reported a possible theft. Deputy settled the matter at the basement without walking through flames. I had already checked there, but that didnt calm me any. The fire was going as fast as I was, if not faster. I tripped and fell, and as I did I saw a flash of blue fabric in the comer. James was on his knees crying; the flames had scared him, and he had hid. We had to crawl through the smoke, and using my coat, I lowered him out of a window to the ground. I heard a siren, but continued to look for Julie. I crawled through the smoke and looked for her frantically. I didnt notice that the flame was that close until my shirt began to bum. I wanted to get up and run, but I knew that was the worst thing to do. I rolled over fast, and smothered the small flame. Then I realized something horrible; if I wanted to get out alive, I had to leave now. I jumped from their window onto their trampoline. I looked at the burning house, and then... I felt a pull on my arm. Julie had ran outside to the neighbors as soon as the fire started, and she was all right. Right then was probably the hardest part of my job, holding all four kids in my arms at once.
