Secretary of Labor Eli- zabeth Dole has welcomed President Bushs announcement that he will nominate William J. Tattersall as head of the Department of Labors Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). He will be responsible for enforcing the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act to help ensure the safety and health of approximately 360,000 miners at 16,000 mining operations. I am pleased that Bill will be heading MSHA, said Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole. He brings a broad range of mining, safety and health, labor relations and managerial experience to the agency and will be a great asset to the department. Tattersall, a lawyer, comes to the department with broad national and international lopment, and public affairs. Before joining the institute, Tattersall worked 23 years for Bethlehem Steel, rising from laborer to increasingly more responsible positions with the corporations management group. These included serving as state government affairs manager, as labor counsel and assistant to the vice president for mining, and as senior labor attorney in the companys industrial relations depart- ment. From 1970 through 1973, Tattersall was labor counsel to the National Bituminous Coal Wage Negotiations with the United Mine Workers of America. In 1974, he sat at the bargaining table as the American steel industrys spokesman. He also served as executive vice president of the Bituminous Coal Operators Assn. Bom in Wilkes Barre, Pa., Tattersall was graduated from Moravian College, Beth- experience in labor and industrial relations. Prior to lehem, Pa., with a bachelors his MSHA assignment, he was deputy secretary general of the International Iron and Steel Institute, Brussels, Belgium, since 1979. In that post, in addition to being the American steel industry representative, he was one of three prin- received his doctor ofjurisprudence degree from De Paul University, Chicago, 111. He served two years in the 1st Armored Division during the Korean conflict before joining Bethlehem Steel in 1956. Between autograph sessions, Petersen will be making a presentation for the League of Utah Writers, Price Chap- Nov. 11, a.m. at the College of Eastern Utah Student Center, Little Theater. Anyone interested is urged to attend. Membership in the league is not mandatory. Sarah Bedford: Charlottes Daughter, published in 1986, contains the life of Petersens grandmother. Ferron Creek on the other hand, has been inspired through the association she has had with her husbands family and friends in his native town of Ferron. Utah histories, LDS history, DUP (Daughters of the Utah Pioneers) and WPA (Works Progress Administration) publications from Emery County were perused in the extensive research undertaken for Ferron Creek. The Utah State Historical Society was frequented and a publication in 1980 by the Emery County Progress provided a wealth of information. Bom in Cleveland, Emery County, Petersen moved to Wellington when she was eight years old. She attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, obtaining a masters degree in education and English. Having begun as a correspondent and feature writer for the Sun Advocate, Petersen has been writing for fifty years. Numerous articles and short stories have been pub- lished in newspapers and magazines. Ferron Creek is Petersens Fifth published book. Her books have included historical biographies as well as an autobiography. She learned a valuble lesson while writing her life story. After gpmpleting the 50-pa- manuscript, she ge found that it bored her to read it. It was nothing but the bare bones. Her son helped her to flesh it out by inquiring as to what she liked, what she ate .... details. Her completed s, autobiography contains and thoughts pictures. In 1974 Petersen joined the League of Utah Writers. In 1984 she was president of the Utah Valley chapter, and in 1987 was state president of the league.
