He said, We need to celebrate our excellent teaching in our schools. Teachers often function behind closed doors and remain anonymous and autonomous, but with peer coaching excellent teaching can become validated and important. Teachers need to know what makes them a good teacher and what they consciously need to do to increase instructional skills even further. Supervisor Roma N. Powell said, The Emery District mentor teachers have been cited by the state as being exemplary in the mentoring process. The mentor training is a pilot program for mentor training in the state of Utah. Mentoring has a long history of success, beginning with Odysseus decision some 3,500 years ago to entrust the educa- tion and development of his son to a wise and learned man named Mentor, and continues to its present application in training nurses, psychologists, doctors, sociologists, scientists, teachers, educational administrators and business executives. Mentoring is a way to improve the induction of beginning teachers and to provide leadership opportunities for career teachers. The Emery District is arranging for these experienced teachers to serve as mentors to beginning teachers. The peer coach training was conducted by Dr. A. Ernest Weeks, district superintendent. The mentor teachers were instructed by Mrs. Powell, Karen Bishop, Geniel Huntington, Jessica Jenkins and Olive Anderson.
