Jack and Sue Harvey spun off m with laurels, medals and jerseys for winning in their age groups at St. George. They know well the agony and ecstasy involved, investing in the bikes, equipment, helmets, jerseys, shoes, gloves and grueling training, lining up at the start and coming in victorious at the finish line. The time trial, a 38 mile Jack and Sue Harvey of Huntington added more hardware to their trophy case after doing race, started at Enterprise where the elevation is 5,200 feet. Sue did not race this one. The criterium, an 8 mile loop in the city, drew both men and women into the contest. Sue won her division, lapping the second placer by four laps. Jack lapped Sue six times. They made us race with the men, who are stronger, and they end up lapping us. The road race, a 38 mile loop starting at Ivins to Gun-loc- k, over steep switchbacks to Veyo and screaming down the Snow Canyon Hill, was grueling. I was screaming, all right. I was going 40 miles an hour and only touched my brakes twice, remembers Sue. I didnt touch my brakes at all, says Jack, the adrenaline rising. He has to win to be happy. His time of one hour 54 minutes was tops. Sue was not far behind. Those old guys call us puppies or babes. One man from Iowa is not only cycling, but running, doing track and field and playing tennis. They forget their arthritis when they dress for battle and go to it. The Harveys in their early 50s are only kids compared to the 80 pluses. Each group is incredivided into ments, so 80 plus is not competing against 50. There is a spirit of comar-aderiSue found herself cycling along with a man. Charlie had rented a bike and had only trained two weeks and he was excited. Were going to make it, Sue, he gasped as they neared the finish line. At that point she left him behind and streaked over first. It is each for himself in the showdown. Sue was riding her new bike for the first time. She has the two orange juice containers in the container. She wore the g zipped five-ye- gloves designed to protect palms, because grasping the handlebars hard for long distance takes its toll of the flesh. Jacks helmet is made to be aerodynamic, lets the air flow over his head. It has slots for air to cool his sweating brow. Everything is designed to cut the wind. His Kestrel bike is equipped with aerodynamic tires less than an inch wide. The spokes are bladed to cut through the wind. Wind is the cyclists greatest enemy. It can actually blow you off. Scott Jack uses clip-o- n handlebars to permit lower crouching. In the drops, it is called. Sue does not like to ride in the chops.
