Show 12, 1988 Emery County Progress Tuesday, April School board awards retrofit bids CELORIS FLORAL and The Emery School District Board of Education accepted bids for retrofit work at several schools at its April 6 board CENTRAL UTAH LIVESTOCK SUPPLY & APPRAISAL meeting Main, Huntington 687-980- Cleveland West bid of $314,278 for five of the six schools while the bid of submitted by Kent $330,679 Stilson Construction for the retrofit at Green River was also approved. The bids approved were the low bids submitted in the two areas. Ernest Weeks presented the governors block grant program and discussed it with die board. It was recommended that the superintendent prepare a report of the pros and cons of this program and provide a recommendation for the board at the next meeting. The State Office of Education has given the district $49,257 to help offset the $470,098 loss caused by the State Local Incentive Program of last year. It was recommended that the state office personnel be invited to the next board meeting to explain this allocation. Next year this program will be the same as this year, it was explained, although there will be no $500,000 cushion. The superintendent also recommeded that the board require a deposit prior to allowing use of district buildings while eliminating rental fees for district constituents. Dr. Weeks futher recommeded that a bus stop east of Elmo, which is less than a tenth of a mile for another bus stop, be eliminated, .and that the children involved be asked to walk to the nearest stop. The recommendation was approved by the board. Karen Force, a senior at Emery High School, met with the board, explaining that she has been invited to go to Washington D.C. as a congressional scholar. She asked the board to help with expenses, and the board voted to give her $200 with the stipulation that she report back to the board regarding her visit there. Board goals were then discussed. It was moved by board president Thomas Roush that the previously set goals and their established prioritites be accepted as goals and priorities for the 1988-8- school year. The motion passed. It was recommended by Mr. Stilson that one unit of art be required in the ninth grade. It was recommended by board member William Bacon that a check be made to determine if it will still be possible to have first and second year Spanish in the 9th and 10th grades at Green River High. Mr. Stilson also 9 that a be set up at class photography to meet the art High help Emery recommended requirements. It was the consensus of the board that the ninth grade art requirement be left as written for now with additional study being done to see if an art ap- or preciation music ap- preciation class can be set up to meet state core requirments in the 9th grade. The board also voted to set up a committee to determine demonstrated proficiency or demonstrated mastery of approved courses outside of the school day or year. Names of potential committee members are to come from the secondary ranks and be provided for board consideration on April 20. honors named CIT- Y- A total of 266 earned honor roll status winter quarter at Southern Utah State College. CEDAR students of the 266 students Thirty-seve- n earned staight A averages. Among those on the list are several from Emery County. They include: Gena R. Dugmore (general education) and Clareen E. Nelson (elementary education) of Ferron and Janice L. Myers (music) and Arlene Snow (music) of Huntington. To be named to the SUSC honor roll, a student must be enrolled taking 15 or more credit hours and earn a quarterly grade point average of 3.60 or above. SUSC grades on a plus and minus system, said director of admissions and records, D. Mark Barton. A 4.00 GPA is a straight A average while a 3.60 full-tim- e, is approximatley an A average.
