DAVIS Progress editor The track season picked up for the Emery Spartans where it left off before spring break as the team had little trouble winning its third meet of the season against Manti and North Sevier last week at Emery. Emery won nine events at the meet which was highlighted by d a performance by Dell Stilson in the pole vault. His height of 139 beat the state mark of 137 Vi" but will not qualify for a state mark because it was not done in a meet. However, it did set a new school mark. state-recor- state-qualifyi- Sophomore Candice Hone maintains a fast pace as she runs in the 1600 meter event last week in track competition at Emery High. ng Stilson then attempted a height of 141 but could not clear the bar in three tries although he came close twice. The Emery senior also placed first in the javelin with a throw of 1612, took second in the 100 meter run and was a member of the Emery first place 400 meter 9 Girls depth brings win relay team. Also taking first place were Jeff Copinga in the 100 meter with a time of 11.45 and in the 200 meter with a time of 23.8. Travis 1600 Mark Justice, third; Travis Willson, fourth; Billy Wright, fifth. second; Whiting, 3200 The region baseball schedule for Emery High opened last week with a bang for the Spartans as they picked up two league wins in as many tries. Emery opened the week with a 5 win over Richfield on Tuesday and then blew away Delta on Friday with an win. Both of the games were played on the Spartan field. This week the team will again face a pair of region opponents when it travels to Juab on Tuesday and then hosts North Sevier on Friday. Game time for each is 3 :30 p.m. Against Richfield last week, Emery showed that it has the ability to come from behind for a win. The Spartans fell behind the Cats 0 through the first three and a half innings, but Emery then scored once in the fourth and five times in the sixth to take the lead. Although Richfield came back with three runs in the top of the seventh, it was not enough as the Spartans got the win. Richfield struck first in the contest when Wildcat hitters tagged Emery starter Devin Arnold for two singles and a double in the second. That led to a 0 Cat lead. Emery had showed little offense to that point as only Kari Mortensen and Arnold had hits for the Spartans. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Emery cut the lead in half. High Emery had just four first with place finishes in a North Sevier and Manti last week on the Emery track, but the Lady Spartans used their depth to score enough points to take the team win. Taking first were Melissa Arrington in the long jump with a leap of 1310, LeAnne Spears in the 3200 meter run, Jennifer Johansen in the 100 meter hurdles, and the 400 meter relay 0 dropped ' a double down the right-fiel- d line and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Travis Wakefield. A triple by Mortensen in the gap scored Wilson, putting the score at 1 for Richfield. Arnold then settled down on the mound, allowing just two hits through the next three innings. The Spartans then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. In that inning, Mortensen reached second on a fielding error, and his pinch runner, Cody Allred, then scored on a single by Bryan Gordon who went to second on a play at the plate. Another error off a ball hit by Blake Butler allowed Gordon to score and Butler to advance to second. Butler advanced to third on a wild pitch while Shane Gagon drew a walk, leaving runners at the corners. Jeff Cisneros then reached base on a fielding error as Butler scored, and runners were again left at the corners as Arnold stepped up to bat. A double by the Emery pitcher scored Gagon as Cisneros went to third. He then scored on ,1.' right-centerfie- ld 2-- The dust flies as Emery's Shane Gagon steals home against Delta in Region 10 baseball action at Emery last week. The Spartans not only got an win over Delta, but the team defeated Richfield in the conference, 6-5 earlier in the week to go 2-- 0 11-- 0 a sacrifice fly by Dell Stilson as Emery scored five times to take a 2 lead. But Richfield wouldnt roll over and die as it came to bat in the top of the seventh. Arnold loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. That prompted coach Jimmy Jones to bring Bryan Gordon in to pitch. With none out, Richfield scored one run on a fielders choice and two on a single and fielding error to put the score at 6-- 6-- 5. But Gordon got the next two outs as the game ended. Against Delta, there was no need for an Emery comeback as the Spartans took control from the first inning. The Spartans scored six runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second and four in the third to take an 0 lead. Delta could not score in the top of the fifth and the game was called after four and a half rule. innings due to the The big hit in the first inning came off the bat of Wilson who had a homer over the field fence. Also in the inning, Gordon doubled to center and then scored on a single by Gagon. Emery added a run in the second when Wilson singled, advanced on an error and scored on a ground-rul- e double by Mortensen. That put Emery on top That score went to 0 in the third. Gagon, who reached first on a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a ground-ou- t. He then stole home on a 7-- 0. 11-- double steal which left Cisneros at second. Next came a double by Dell Stilson to score Cisneros. After a walk to Arnold, Wilson doubled to score Arnold and Stilson to round out the games scoring. Wilson finished with three hits, including the home run, and five RBI. Mortensen, Gordon and Gagon had two hits each. Pitching for Emery, and going the distance, was Travis Wakefield who gave up just three hits through five innings. He also had six strikeouts. |
