Show Sports Preview, 1985-8- 6 Season 27 At state tournament Two Spartan wrestlers finish in top five Emery Spartan wrestlers finished the season at the state tournament in Cedar City. There, two local grapplers placed in the top five while the team finished in the middle of the meet. The brother combination of Seth and Shawn McCourt proved to be Emerys greatest weapon at state as the two m fourth placed and fifth respectively. Shawn, a senior, won three of five matches while Seth, a sophomore, finished with a 2 state record. 4-- Overall, Emery won 14 matches in 16 attempts for 42.5 points to finish 13th. Winning the tournament was Delta with 219.5 points while Wasatch was second with 206.5 and Union third with 164.5. The rest of the standings include Richfield 118, Millard 107.5, Morgan 98.5, Cedar 84.5, Juab 76.5, Grand 75.5, Pineview 62, Manti 44, Hurricane 43, Emery 42.5, North Sanpete 37.5, San Juan 25.5, Dixie 24.5 and South Sevier 14. Of the eight Spartans wrestling at the tournament, six were winners in the first round. Travis Taylor, 105, won 4 over Jason Trimble of Moab while Dustin Taylor, 112, pinned Brian Starley of Millard in the third period. Guy Allred, 132, pinned Zacbery Peck of Moab in the third round, and Shawn Mc2 over Troy Court won Wilkensen of Dixie. Seth McCourt also won by a third period pin over Greg Anderson of North Sanpete. Robert Johansen won 8 over Paulo Blazer of Hurricane in the 185 match. Losing for Emery in the first round were Daymon Leonhardt, 126, and Trent Hess, 167. Things got a little tougher in the second round as the wrestlers moved in against higher seeded wrestlers. Only Leonhardt and Shawn McCourt were second round winners as Leonhardt got an overtime pin against Benny Whitehorse of Richfield, and McCourt defeated Travis Perkins of Pineview, In the second round of the 10-- . 11-- 12-- 3-- 1. consolation championship matches, Dustin Taylor picked up a win while Allred and Seth McCourt also advanced with wins. I didnt want our guys to 7-- 8-- during the season. We had our moves down and were in good condition. I think we were where we should have been for the tournament as far as being prepared.
