Juniors on the team are Cindy Jones, Kristin Estes, Christy Fisher, Carlene By LARRY W. DAVIS Progress editor Questions about how well the Emery High volleyball team will match up in competition in a new region will be partially answered this week as the Lady Spartans open the 1985 season at Matson, and Russele Snow. Sophomores, who will fill JV positions, are Kristie Nelson, Katie Perry, Jackie Huntsman, Manti. Shannon Johansen, Gayla Carter, Merrianne Ewell, and Coach Nancy Reed said that members of the team have Emery will enter the season after taking second in the state tournament last year. We lost eight seniors from that team, Coach Reed said, but weve good some experience returning and weve got good height. experience the coach referred to comes mostly from senior Kym Estes, the only returning starter, and senior Michelle Riley who saw a lot of varsity action last season. Both have height and are excellent blockers and spikers. Other seniors this year, who The Lorie Matson. f Coach Reed said that along with Estes and Riley, Sadler and Kristin Estes will give Emery depth along the net, hitting and blocking. However, she said that the team will have to develop a better setting game since top setters from last year are gone. She said that Carlene Matson proved to be a solid setter on the JV team last year and that Janice Farnsworth could contribute in that area. With the new region align- ment comes a new scheduling policy which has the coach wondering how things will come together. To reduce the amount of travel, the schedule calls for varsity teams to play two matches each time they com Successor Trustee 600 Deseret Plaza Salt I.ake City, Utah 84111 Telephone: (801)521-025- 0 the Emery County Progress Published August 1985. 14, 21. PUBLIC NOTICES NOTICE OF MEETING The Southeastern at 10: uo a.m. at the Green River Senior Citizen Center, 212 North Long Street, pete in region. When Emery goes to Manti this Thursday, the varsity will play at 5 p.m., followed by a junior varsity match, and then the varsity will play another match. This replaces the scheduling of the past. I like the idea of reducing travel and saving money, Coach Reed said. There are home-and-ho- some problems though. Some of the girls who play both JV and varsity could end up playing a lot of games in one trip. Itll cut down on the time to prepare for matches too. Itll be like a tournament every time we play a region match. With the new schedule, Emery will not have the opportunity to play any preseason matches and previous matches with traditional Carbon, Moab, Springville, and San Juan will be eliminated. Following the match at Manti on Thursday, which begins at 5 p.m., Emery will open at home on Sept. 5, against North Sanpete. On Sept. 12, Emery will host Juab, and on Sept. 19, the girls travel to South Sevier. On Sept. 24, the Lady Spartans will play at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, and on Sept. 28, they will compete in the Moab Tournament. The October schedule will have Emery at Gunnison on Oct. 3, while Richfield will be at Emery on , Oct. 8, The final match of the regular season will have Millard at Emery. No region tournament is planned, and the state tournament will be held at Richfield on Nov. Coach Reed said that the new region will offer more competition for Emery, and she said that most of the teams in Region 10 are strong. However, she added that Emery traditionally plays better against tougher The better the competition. competition, the better we are, she said. 1-- 2. salina auction Salable pared to at auction 473 com- last week and 364 last year.
