By RUTH Staff WARNER writer Kris Justesen, oriental student medicine of and acupuncture at the San Francisco School of Oriental Medicine, recently returned to Orangeville to visit with her family, Mr. and Mrs. William Justesen. A native of Orangeville, she graduated from Emery High School to go on to the College of Eastern Utah where she attained an associate degree in science. Following CEU, she attended Utah State majoring in education University, both health and physical education for which she received her bachelors degree. Those students included babies from six months to . adults. Besides the classes, time was set aside to allow for lap swimming, exercise programs, and just plain water fun for those of all ages. Throughout the summer, a swim program was established by managers, Mr. and Mrs. Woolstenhulme of Castle Dale, who devoted much of their time and effort in keeping the program going in spite of a few complaints about cold water. Unfortunately, swimming in Emery County will end on Aug. 31, after which the indoor pool will be drained and left to stand. When told of the closing, one needs to be closed. Since school has started last week, we have taken in $8 and that isnt enough to pay for the chemicals, let alone the electricity, Woolstenhulme said. For those people in Emery County who wish to continue with an exercise program, or for those moms who want their babies pool safe, they will have to travel to Price for that water safety program. Last year we tried to keep the pool open the but there werent enough people interested in a fall and winter program, Councilman Ronald Sanders, director of the pool, said. If the people of Emery County would support a swim program in the fall and winter months, we could keep the pool Sanders open the said. year-roun- year-aroun- d, d, she chiropractic medicine, but after investigating oriental medicine, I felt that it offered a much broader field. At first, my dad wanted to know why I chose that profession when I could have gone into law for the same cost, Justesen said, but now he has begun to understand acupuncture and the Oriental Corp where she coordinates the activities of the Corps and makes sure that the required tools are issued. California has maintained the old CCC, whereby those who are in need of work or training can get it through the Corps, learning a trade, while building parks and buildings required by the state or cities, she ex- way. plained. For example, a survey was performed on a group of people with ulcers. One half of the group was treated by Western medicine and the other The by Oriental medicine. results were that those treated the Western way were still on medication and having to watch their diet. The others felt normal, with no symptoms of ulcers and were on a normal diet that included acid foods. She went on to say that the Chinese feel that the environment plays an important part in our health and that the human body should avoid cold, damp aid wind. Wind especially is the cause of a lot of ailments, arthritis in particular. The amount of education required to become an acupuncture technician varies from state to state. New Mexico requires four years and California three years after attaining a bachelors degree in science from an accredited school. She plans to graduate in another two to three years as a technician, then hopes to continue on to become a doctor of Oriental medicine. When shes not attending e school, Kris has a job with the San Fransisco Civilian full-tim- Conservation time coaching and playing softball. While still living here in Emery County, Justesen helped with a lot of the youth activities such as coaching and organizing teams. California goes all out when it comes to sports, that means all sports. Soccer starts before the children begin in school, then it is continued throughout their school years, Justesen said. Im considering going into law enforcement in San Fransisco. That way I can learn another aspect in health besides having more time for my studies, she said. After graduating from SFOM, she plans to leave California, returning to the mountains, and work in a field and do some research, eventually becoming a doctor of Oriental medicine. In California, acupuncture and Oriental medicine are fast becoming a way of life, especially in the control of weight and smoking. Hospitals sports-medici- ne are using acupuncture as an aid in surgery, she said. She suggested that anyone wishing to learn more about Oriental medicine SALAMI CHUB 79 EA. 12 OZ.
