Shortly before the turn of the century, Ferron was a thriving agricultural community with the sale of peaches adding a large sum to the economy. Groves of peaches flourished in this small town, and the towns people thought them to be the largest, juciest and most tasty in the nation. . In 1893, word of the Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago arrived in Ferron and the growers banded together and boxed their best fruit, shipping it to the fair. For their endeavor, the peach growers of Ferron gained notoriety as producing the nations finest peaches. To celebrate the great event, peaches and cream were served on the church lawn by the communitys young ladies. For the next few years, a repeat of this most unusual celebration took place, until 1904, when the city fathers decided that an 5-- 7. annual event was called for; thus Peach Days was born. Friends, relatives, and strangers came from all over Utah and the western states. To accommodate the many visitors, the citizens opened their homes and provided bed and breakfast for all who came to that first Peach Days. Parades, races and of course, peaches were included in the main events of this exciting celebration. As people began to in town, citizens ' graciously gave them peaches, a deed which continued until the attendance grew too large to handle. Boxes of peaches were then set out by the curbs, so that the visitors could help them- arrive selves. the Through years of celebrations, such notables as the Osmond Brothers have appeared in the parade and on stage at the Peach Days fete. Wrestling also had its place with some of the nations top wrestlers appearing and challenging the male population of the town to show their strength. Peach Days 1985 will be a VEME3, 2 EEliUISrj continuance of those exciting days. Ray Wareham, chairman, along with the members of the Peach Days committee has planned another three full days of fun and excitement for the youngest to the oldest. We plan to kick off Peach Days 1985 with the selection of our Peach Days queen and her court on the evening of Sept. 5, he said. Friday, the arts and crafts exhibit will open in the park, where guests will be able to see some of the countys finest paintings and other crafts in the fine arts. The handicrafts and homecrafts of the county men, women, and children will also be featured for all to see. Best of all are the races that will be on both Friday and Saturday afternoons and will feature some of the favorites who have been running at Wyoming Downs during the summer. Horse racing in the early 1900s called for the local cowboys to try their luck at seeing who had the finest steed and could endure the rough and dusty course that was set up for them.
