Show 2 Sports Preview, 1985-8- 6 Season Change in Region Eight structure means more league games for Carbon gridders By ED McKEEVER Sports editor m p wtjr ' " t, Smm 3 - 'j - m 'j - i change in the stucture of Region Eight will send the 1985 edition of Carbon Dino football right into league contests. The change? Goodbye Lehi, hello Uintah, hello Provo and hello Timpview. Two extra league games give the Dinos no chance to see where they stand before the league play starts except for the annual Blue and White game that was played Aug. 24. But will the Dinos be ready to face Uintah in their season opener Sept. 6 on foreign turf? Coach Mike Kernodle says yes. Weve got a solid looking backfield so far, Kernodle said. He is looking to returning senior Glenn Larsen and junior Mark Olson to be the strong Dinos in the backfield with backup from juniors Shane Smuin and Keith Mele. Also looking to be varsity material for the backfield, Kernodle said, are sophomores Rich Colombo and Todd Gastin. Two sophomores are battling for the back up position for Brad quarterback. Gwyther, a standout from Notre Dame and Tim Tiller, Helper Jr. Highs athlete of the year, are trying to impress Kernodle and earn that spot. Several returning Dinos are warming up to make a solid line for the team. Senior Dave Knott, 6 foot 2 inches, 190 pounds, is probably the best lineman weve got, Kernodle said. Knott will be handling a tackle position on offense and will be a linebacker for the Dino defense. At center will be Jason Quigley, a 6 foot 1 inch, 220 pound senior. He will also be a part of the Dino D. Playing as a defensive lineman and offensive guard, John Bonacci, 5 foot 11 inches, 185 pounds, is in his second year with the team. As of now, rounding out the offensive line is Tony Montoya, a 5 foot 11 inch, 180 pound senior.
