This has helped me understand the political process to get legislation thru the House, Senate and executive branch of government. Having lived in rural Utah most of my life, 1 understand some of the challenges facing the residents of the rural part of the state. public representatives are fully accountable to the people ho elect them. 2. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY All persons should have the righta and opportunity to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society w and the environment. 3. ECOLOGICAL WIS- My goal will be to serve all citizens of District 65 to the DOM best of my ability. Some areas of great concern are: Transportation. Good roads are necessary to improve tourism and other areas of economic developments, as roads are the only means of moving products in many areas of the state. I am 48 years of age and married to Susette DeCoeter. I moved to Moab in 1986 to teach natural history as a professional guide on the Colorado Plateau. I also serve as a volunteer for it educational and advocacy organizations. I joined the Green Tarty because the platform encourages a spirit of change that our society must adopt, in order to successfully meet the serious resource challenges of the coming century. This platform believes that a truly free and democratic society is based on initiatives that come from di- rect citizen participation at the grassroots level, and that such initiatives are very successful and long term. Below is an abbreviated platform position of the Green Tarty, which I will endeavor to uphold to the very best of my ability. Thank you very much for your consideration on Election Day. The lack of health insurance coverage is a great concern. that needs addressing. The relationship with all levels of government is important. The best government is that closest to the people, municipal and county. The state needs to cooperate and do what it can to provide services to the residents of the state. Education is perhaps the most important function of government and 111 work to help with funding to improve both public sad higher education. I will work hard to keep the 1 1 6 of 1 percent sales tax money available for loans for water projects. My goal is to be available for all citizens to be able to express their concerns to me. Your support is appreciated. Jack A. Seitz non-prof- Human societies must NON-VIOLENC- E It is essential that we de- velop effective alternatives to society's current patterns of violence. We will work to de- militarize and eliminate weapons of mass, destruction, without being naive about the intentions of other govern- ments. 5. DECENTRALIZATION Centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, environmental destruction, and militarization. Therefore, we support a restructuring of social, political, and economic institutions away from a system that is controlled by and mostly benefits the powerful few, to a democratic, less bu- reaucratic system. 6. COMMUNITY-BASE- ECONOMICS AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE We recognize it is essential to create a vibrant and sustainable economic system, one that can create jobs and provide a decent standard of living for all people while maintaining a healthy ecological balance. A successful economic system will offer meaningful work with dignity, while paying a living wage, which reflects the real value of a person's work. 7. FEMINISM AND GENDER EQUITY We have inherited a social system based on male domination of politics and economics. We call for the replacement of the cultural ethics of domination and control with more cooperative ways of interacting that respect differences of opinion and gender. 8. RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY We believe it is important to value cultural, ethnic, ra- cial, sexual, religious, and spiritual diversity, and to promote the development of respectful relationships across these lines. We acknowledge and encourage respect for other life forma than our own and the preservation of biodiversity. 9. PERSONAL AND GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY We encourage individuals to act to improve their perg sonal and, at the same time, to enhance ecological balance and social harmony. We seek to join with well-bein- people and organizations around the world to foster peace, economic justice, and the health of the planet. 10. FUTURE FOCUS AND SUSTAINABILITY Our actions and policies should be motivated by longterm goals. We seek to protect valuable natural resources, safely disposing of or reusing all waste we create, while developing a sustainable economics that does not depend on continual expansion for survival. We must counterbalance the drive for short-terprofits by assuring that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations that will inherit the results of our actions. 11. QUALITY OF LIFE Our overall goal is not merely to survive, but to share lives that are truly worth living. We believe the quality of our individual lives is enriched by the quality of all of our lives. We encourage everyone to see the dignity and intrinsic worth in all of life, and to take the time to understand m and appreciate themselves, their community, and the magnificent beauty of this world. John Weisheit Brad King Candidate for House of Representatives, Dist. 69 It has Wen my honor and privilege to have served the people of District 69 (all of Carbon and parts of Emery County) for the past six years as their State Representative. Through the process of redistricting, the new district 69 s of Carbon includes in Emery Green River County, of the one thousand County, residents of Moab, and all of San Juan County. While in the legislature I have served on the Business Labor Committee, the Transportation Committee, and the Public Education AppropriaFor the tions Committee. I have served four past years in House Minority Leadership first as the Caucus Manager and for the last two years as the Assistant Minority Whip. two-third- These leadership positions have allowed me to sit on the Management, Executive Appropriations, and Audit Committees. My priorities have not changed since my first session of the legislature and fortunately my committee assignments have mirrored my priorities. My top three priorities are: 1) Education. I do indeed believe that our children are our future and that a good education is the key to their have continually fought for more funding for our schools, rational school reform, and shared responsibilities for student achievement between parents, teachers, students, local school boards, and the legislature. A well educated work force is imperative to not only our children's future, but it is also the key to economic expansion for both our local area and our state. future. I 2) Economic Development. I will continue to work for pro- grams and incentives for business to relocate to our area. Even more importantly, I will try to convince the legislature that providing incentives to home grown businesses and small businesses is more important that giving away millions of dollars in tax incentives to get very big businesses to relocate to our state. Small businesses account for nearly seventy percent of jobs created in Utah. Protecting these businesses and allowing them to grow should be our priority. 3) Transportation (high- way safety). will continue to lead the charge on improving the safety on highway 6. It is absolutely necessary that we continue to apply pressure to I the state to keep focused on the much needed improvements throughout Southeast Utah. We have made some important progress the past few years, but there is still much to be done. More passing lanes on highways 6 and 191 from the East Carbon turnoff through Green River and Moab to Blanding and for Highway 10 through Emery County are sorely needed. These projects are not only significant to us locally, but have state-wid- e importance. With the help of Senator Dmitrich, our good local elected officials, and involved citizens of our four counties, we will continue to see our transportation needs addressed. My qualifications are sim-plthese: 1. 1 have spent all but the first five years of my life in Eastern Utah. 2. I want to continue to stand up for the people of ruy ral Utah against the misunderstanding of my urban counterparts so that we receive our fair Bhare. 3. My six years of service "on the hill" have taught me how to be effective within a complex system. 4. 1 can work across party lines to make positive things happen. have truly enjoyed servthe ing people of District 69 and ask for your vote in the I November election. My experience and focus on my three priorities will continue to serve the citizens of Southeast Utah well. I ask for your vote on November 5th and look forward to continuing my service in the State Legislature. Brad King Judy Carmichael Candidate for County Council At Large Im running for the Grand County Council for the at-lar- I have lived in position. Grand County since 1960. I have promoted this area happily, because Ive never wanted to Jive anywhere else. I understand why people want to live here, but we have to plan, and make opportunities for others. Grand County has welcomed people and ideas from everywhere. Our boom and bust history has made me careful and con- servative. I understand that money has to be spent in responsible ways, to encourage business, protect the assets of the county, and create the safest environment possible for the people of the county. Stabilizing the economy with businesses other than tourism would be great, but what we can do is support local business when possible. I'm proud of Grand County, I have had a ringside seat in a panoramic view of this place and I think we are doing pretty well. I would love to help make it pos42-yea- r sible for seniors to be able to live here when they need special assistance, that's why the MAPS Project is so important. The senior center and assisted living center would make it possible for our aging parents to have care in our community, I have had to watch old friends leave the area for lack of facilities that specialize in senior services. But I would like to have higher educational opportunities for our citizens, young and not so young. 1 believe we would all like to see the cleanup of the tailings pile. The County council has an Times-Independe- obligation to see the bigger picture. Economic benefit comes from specialized services for seniors, and better educated citizens and the tourists will not miss the tailings pile. I feel like its important for citizens to serve their community. Im hard working, caring and capable. If Im elected I will do the job to the best of my ability. Thank you. Be Bure and vote on November 6th. Judy Carmichael Arlan Lazere Candidate for County Council At Large First of all I would like to thank the for printing these platform statements. Grand County, as well as the rest of this great nation is facing challenging times. I believe the people of this community know it is critical to elect council people who are imaginative, and who will take the initiative in identifying and addressing the complex issues that we are facing. We need public servants who are thoughtful, creative, We need and excellent and experienced We need to problem-solverTimes-Independe- nt well-informe- d, open-minde- d. s. elect people who know how to build and maintain relationships and we need people who demonstrate respect even to those with whom they might disagree. It is a difficult thing to toot ones own horn but I believe I have these qualities and abilities to offer and I am asking for your support on November 6th. I own a locally oriented clothing business in Moab and a home in Spanish Valley. I am a transplant from Colorado where I lived for 40 years and where I experienced what ran happen to rural areas if their governing bodies are not ex- tremely alert, well-informe- d, and proactive. Before opening my business in Moab, I worked for 25 years as a mental health administrator and provider. I also participated in local government at the town, city, and county levels. I have experience in planning, parks and recreation, and as a Town in Council member Jamestown, Colorado. I am Firmly and deeply committed to my adopted home. I have been visiting here for over 20 years and feel extremely blessed to be here and to be a part of this wonderfully diverse community. I am a member of the Grand County Economic Development Committee, the Chamber of Commerce, Canyonlands Arts Council, the League of Women Voters, Canyonlands Community Recycling Board, and the American Association of Retired Persons. I have also recently been appointed to the Special Services Recreation District. I love being involved with this community. I am knowledgeable about most of the governmental entities in Grand County and have attended many meetings. I have also met with many of our civic leaders as well as with individual citizens from different segments of our community to listen to their ideas and their concerns. nt My platform is based on the notion that we need to work from our common community interests, not from what divides us. Because we are a diverse community we will not always agree, but democracy itself is based on dialogue and dissent. We have a wonderful tool to help us. It is the Grand County General Plan and many citizens have volunteered their time, energy, and vision to help update this Plan. The current update process with the Planning Commission began approximately 9 months ago. The Plan is supposed to be reviewed annually but this has not lieen the case for the last 6 years. 1 do not think it is realistic to update the plan annually but do believe it should lie reviewed yearly as was stated in the General Plan of 1996 and in 1999 when the Planning Commissions bylaws were subsumed into the 1 new Land Use Code. Most of us know two of the major issues we are fac- ing are Economic Develop-mentDiversificati- and the need for more comprehensive health services. We are making progress in the right direction due in part to the creation of the Economic Development office and the progress of MAPS (Moab Area Planning for Seniors), Additionally, the cooperation and hard work of many incumbents and administrators in both Grand County and Moab City are helping our community tackle the issues. After issue identification, the question is "how do you plan to address these issues?" Due to limited space I will give you the nutshell version of my plan for economic development. I will promote recognition of Grand County as a cultural as well as a recreational des- tination. I will do this by drawing on our human and natural resources to attract or create a private college or arts institute. Additionally, I will support our current technical school, college, and university. I will support funding for the Economic Development office to intensify diversification efforts and work to reduce government expenses by increasing efficiency and avoiding duplication of effort, particularly by working with Moab City and the Chamber of Commerce. I will work to protect our water sources by promoting conservation and I will work to expand affordable housing options. I will also work to es- tablish an Animal Shelter in the and support clean-up County. As you councilperson pledge to remain an open-minde- I d, independent, and public servant. will follow the guidelines of the General Plan. I will be available to you by holding regular office hours in addition to returning phone calls promptly. 1 will work really hard for all Grand County citizens and, of course, keep doing my homework. With my experience in well-informe- d I government, business, healthcare, and administration, I believe I am the best candidate to tackle the tough issues we are facing.
