On October 16, the Red Devils hosted Region 14 competition. As Coach Bernie Radcliffe had been predicting all season, the meet would be a dogfight and it lived up to the prediction. The ladies stepped up to the starting line first. Returning region champ, Lora Lee, freshman Shelly Welch, and Faye Bylilly would be the big hope for the Lady Red Devils. Shenandoah Drake from Juan Diego took an early lead and Summit, or Rowland Hall. Coach Radcliffe said the finish would be like someone shuffled a deck of Cross-Countr- y cards. The favored runner, Johnny Rodriques of North Summit, took an early lead and fought off a strong effort by Chris Bossart of Row land Hall. As all runners crossed the finish line, their name tags were removed and put on a scoring board. Looking at that board, one would have thought one was looking at a rainbow Purple, White, Yellow, Blue, all mixed just as and Red Coach Radcliffe said would happen. Cody Dalton led all Red never lost it. Lora edged Shelly at the wire for fourth and fifth respectively. Faye sprinted in for a fantastic 11th Devil runners with a fifth place finish. Scott BishofT, ninth place, Cody Tibbetts, 11th place, Roger Stucki 18th, and Keegan Stewart 19th, completed the scoring. Trevor Knutson and Nephi Williams finished the Red Devil field by holding off the attacks of the remaining teams. The scoring turned out to be as tight as was predicted. place finish. When all runners had completed the race and points were totaled, the Lady Red Devils found themselves in second place and State Finals bound. This is the first time Grand has sent a complete ladies team to the state competition. The tight battle for the mens competition then took center stage. The region championship could be taken by any four teams; Grand, Juan Di- - Juan Diego put together a strong showing by taking region with a score of 59 points. North Summit was second with a score of 61. Grand, qualifying for State, was third with 62 points. Rowland Hall, not qualifying a team but did qualify one runner, finished v 0 1 Grand High School Girls Cross-Countr- y team. with 64 points. Juab had a score of 79. This was one of the tightest races anyone had seen in years. ' With the men qualifying for State for the fourth time in four years, they also accomplished something never before done at team GCHS. The qualified 2 teams for the state cross-countr- y competition. On October 23, both teams traveled to Salt Lake for the seasons finale, the Utah State High School Championships. Coach Anderson and Coach Radcliffe encouraged the runners to trust their respective training and to believe in themselves. Cross-Countr- y The words found a home in each runners heart. RAC Advisory group will meet Oct. 29 in Green River On October 29 the Southeast Regional Wildlife Advisory Council (RAC) will meet to discuss proposals for future big game proclamations. After the Braves made it as dose as the line, the Devils managed to stop Carlsen for little or no gain on three successive plays, w ith Coleman Swasey, Wells, and Hirschfeld making the respective tackles for the Devils. Grand was later forced to punt on their next possession, however, and North Summit responded with a pass to Kasey Martin, who raced down the left sideline for the touchdown with 4.02 left the third. The kick attempt failed, so the score was for North Summit. The Braves then immediately recovered the ball on the ensuing onside kick, but an interception by Hirschfeld stopped that Brave drive with 2.30 remaining in the third quarter. Coach Radcliffe had told Natalie Stucki and Natasha Diehl that the outcome of the team efforts would be determined by their sion and turned in their seasons best runs.
