This year, 13 teams raised $22,000 in contributions by participating in the American Lung Associations (ALA) Early Bird Registration Program for The 6th Annual 24 Hours of Moab Our hats are off to everyone who participated! The fund raising part is easy and it pays your way into the race. What could be better9 How about the good feeling that youll get knowing that your efforts help the ALA continue their work to keep children from becoming addicted to cigarettes, provide programs that improve the quality of life for children with asthma, and conduct other programs aimed at eliminating lung disease. Boy, was I wrong. I had WAY underestimated the costs of producing the race. I lost money for the first three years, trying to grow the event into a profitable enterprise. In hindsight, its clear to see that without the financial support of sponsors, this awesome event would not have been possible. I would have gone belly-up- . Thats just the plain truth of the matter. Even now, this event would not be possible without our beloved sponsors. Financial support from these great of companies covers nearly our operating budget. In a very real one-thir- d sense, they make this race happen and they keep the cost of entry fees down. What do they get out of all this? In this day and age of competitive, markets, brand consumer-drive- n loy- alty is the name of the game. Well, my friends, here are the brands that you can feel good about being loyal to because they share your enthusiasm for this great sport and they recognize the impressive effort that you and your teammates are about to undertake. When we court sponsors, we go or companies who represent these same ideals. Take a look at the list of logos on the course map. Can you point to one company that hasnt built their success on their (if necessary). This event is about having fun and spending time with your friends. And well, its about racing, too. But, if you come upon an injured rider (whether youre a racer or a spectator), please do the right thing and be prepared to stop and assist. To tend to an injured rider, remember your ABCs: Airway, Breathing, Circulation. Check to make sure the injured persons airway is clear. Can they breathe? Are they bleeding severely? Are they conscious and alert? Are they able to respond? Do they have any obvious deformities (broken bones, unusual swelling, head injuries)? Do they have neck or back pain (if yes, do NOT move the patient). Report the injury immediately, as follows: 1) Someone must stay with the injured racer until medical help arrives. 2) Report the injury by sending a message with the next racer to the nearest EMSCourse Marshal 3il ' it- -. art IT Hi? .crvTr.i Sta- g tion; this could require on the course. 3) Pass along a brief description of the injury and its severity (see ABCs above). 4) Use the kilometer markers to reference the location of the iiyured rider. 5) Once medical staffis on the scene, the assisting racer is free to proceed. 6) As soon as the EMS arrives and tends to the injured rider, they will radio Base Station to report the assisting racers Team and Team Name to GGP staff (as well as the injured riders Team and Team Name).
