Jim and Maryann Widdison in Castleton have had an older bear hanging around their place all summer Some fear the bear will not hibernate this year because of the lack erf food and will forage for food all winter The most recent encounter with a bear occurred last Sunday morning w hen Steve Ward of the Day Star Seventh-Day Academy spotted a bear up a tree about 5 a.m. at the school. When he spotted it again about 7 a m. he began to get concerned and called the Division of Wildlife Resources for help. When DWR officers showed up at about noon, their plan was to shoot him with a tranquilizer and put him in a cage. Their first two shots missed and the bear became annoyed and climbed out of the tree and went up another not far away where they darted him. The bear left that tree and went to a home on Shafer Lane, passing within a few feet of a woman sitting outside, and took up residence in her cottonwood tree where he received another shot from the tranquilizer gun. He then walked across the street to Jean Wilsons property and lay down. As officers walked up to him, he got up and took off toward the school where he laid down in the creek. As the officers approached again the bear got up and took off again toward the schools apple orchard and hasnt been seen since. The big male bear had a tag in each ear from previous captures, and according to Trudine Whitney, who witnessed much of the proceedings, it was surprising how big he was. She said he was a cinnamon color and looked rather funny with the tags in the ears and darts sticking out of his rump as he left the scene. The officers decided not to pursue Castle Valley Co.mments There have been bear sightings in the valley for quite awlule now, particularly at the upper end and near the creek.
