MABCH 20, 192t WEST HIGH MIDGETS TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP McCredie Rebuilding Beavers With Talent , t That Shows Promise ' ? - " . ? - ; t Aggregation of Youngsters Classiest That Has Appeared in Portland Training Camp in Fifteen Years; More Players Coming From Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, By GEORGE Special to Th Trlbah. ANTA. MARIA, Cal.. March 19. Slowly, but surely, Walter Mt Credie la building uj a strong team for the 1921 pennant race in the Pacific Coast baseball league. After tearing his '1920 aggregation to pieces by the disposal of Oeorge Malsel, "Tex" Wlsterzll, "Suds" Suth erl&nd, Paddy Siglln, Carl Spranger, Art Koehler and Biff Srhaller,- - the. Beaver leader began laying his plans for a team that would finish well up in the flag chase. At the end of the first ten day' training It can be said that he has started a successful reconstruction of the Beavers. The first thing that Mac accom-- , pllshed was to surround himself with sn aggregation of youngsters, the like of whom he has never had under Ills wing since he took up the management of the club in 1905. In exehange for Malsel, McCredie will get two players from the Chicago Cubs with the promise of addItionaLhelp should it be needed. For Sutherland Mao has the promise of three players from De- -. trolt and he is going to insist on the with players Tigers coming through whom he can depend upon. A fourth Is due from the Tigers on the deal player which sent Koehler to the Oakland club. M U ' 1 j , f ' 4 Krug Expected to Join. Marty Krug was obtained In exchange for Wlsterail and a player Is dus Portland In the Wlsterzll transaction. Krug Is a holdout, but there la a likelihood of hts accepting the terms offered. Krug has always been sulky before the opening of a pennant race and for that reason McCredie believes that he will join the club In the near future. The players due McCredie, together with crop of youngsters and the showing to date of the regulars, a very well leader Insures the Beaver balanced aggregation. Included among the players Mao has In camp are some sweet hitters. Poole, the new first e acker, Is a demon with the willow, judging from the form he has shown. Dick Cox la going to have his best season since he joined the Beavers, as the Santa Monica youngster has been crashing the ball at a great clip this spring, starting from where he left off at the dose of the 1920 race. Sargent to Flay Third. Krug Is a hitter. Last year he made whole bagful of extra bate clouts and if the present spirit of -- the squad la Injected Into him after he Joins the team he ought to have a better season. Sargent, the third eacker, whom McCredie expects from Detroit, Is no weakling with the wlllowr' Last vear with the Buffalo dub of the International league he batted ,90t in 117 games, lining out 112 hits for 179 bases. , There are some youngsters Mao Intends to carry this season who are beginning to get their eye on the ball, These are Haxen Payton, the most natural shortstop McCredie has pteked up In several years; Leroy Messall, who batted .920 In the Idaho State league last year, and Walter Genln. who halls from the Spokane club of the Psciflo International circuit. Ike Wolfer has Joined the squad and chances are that the Portland coy will make a strong bid for one of the outfield positions. . Behind the bat there will be a punch with the stick In the old reliable Gus Fisher. Del Baker and "Rip King. Fisher should be, providing his arm holds out in good shape, a very valuable man to the Beavers. a - HERTZ. t ton, or a new man at short, and Sargent at third. Should Kkug fall to report Klngdon will ba started at second and an effort will be made to land a new man. If Paton falls to field In Coast league standard at short be will probably be replaced by a man whom McCredie expects to land from Detroit. i? - , ; u i' J, Ulf Hv; I i Yf k y Tsi ' ) U K Y CiS It Only Costs $8 to Enter the United States In ths Outfield. Dick Cox has cinched his berth in centerfield. He plays this than he did right field. ?ositton better other positions ore undecided. If the season should open this coming Tuesday Instead of a fortnight later, Mao would use Messall In left field and Genln In right. Ike Wolfer is bound to give these two youngsters a fight for a regular berth, Wolfer has had considerable more expert ence and possesses almost as much speed as either of them. Art Bourg and Frank Wilson has to be considered, as he Is tn good fashion. hitting the ball Bourg is a natural hitter, but lacks the fielding ability. Mac tried Bourg at first, but he lacked the class around the Initial sack. In case Mac. finds that the youngster cannot play up to the Coast league standard he will relv on the Cubs for an outcomfielder. In fact, he ha a ing from the Windy City Nationals. the without playRight now, counting ers due from the big leagues, McCredie has a team that measures up very favorably with the one ,that started the 1920 pennant chase. Mac Is working hard with the club. He wants a winner and Is not leaving any stones unturned to give the Portland fans a winner. , 1 er LINEUP OF SEALS FrOnt row, left to right: Ernst Hagen, guard r Ernest Knott, guard; MartOwe Peacock, captain at ail, LCwrence Cooley, guard; Paul CrOtsman, guard; Homr Ch riatenaen, coach. fler. The Panther cubs who are members of this team have won six and lost no games this year. They have defeated the L, D. B. U. midgets twice. East high midgets twice and the Granite midgets twice. In all these games the lads have worked well together and showed some real fighting spirit and good playing form. The team consists of Marlowe Peacock, captain and forward; Sidney Squires, forward; Kenneth Taylor, center; Ernest Knott, guard; Frank Jeffs, guard; Ernest Hagen, Dick Drushall, Lawrence Cooley, Paul Crossman and Ellsworth Crossman, substitutes. This Is ths first year that the West high has ever had a midget basketball team, and since It has been such a success, there wilt probably be a midget team In the future years of basketball at the school. fo-v- Power by Acquiring of Players of Known Value. to Tbo Tribune. SEALS' TRAININCf CAMP, MONTEREY, Cal., March 19. Manager Charles Graham has material for two clubs of first division caliber. Here is the way the cream of the talent, aside from the batteries, looks to James P. Hughes of the San Francisco Chronicle: "Take the infield man for man, with both new and old players included: O'Connell hit the old apple on the nose for Iasi year Vnl .4,raff to be sure, btit a goodrp.hevy one If consistent and accompanied by Jazzy fielding. O'Connell was In and out last season, and Man- - ager Graham Is optimistic over his showing when he gets Into the game right along. OConnell Is as sure of his Job as anyone on the club, and If he 1 able to get hla blow frequentlike he will be among those present right along. "Jimmy Caveney needs no Introduction to the fans. Jim clicked an average of .279 for the 192 season, which Is mighty good bludgeoning for an lnfielder, and he Is a youngster who Is getting better all tH the time. Some.-o- f wise rallblras at tills training camp are picking Jimmy for a trip to tbe big bush this fall, but that all rests In the weeks that are to come. "Walsh was the possessor of an average of .280 last year and looks as though he would do as good or better this season. He Is working hard and will be a hard man to pry off the Infield pay roll. Kamm hit .237 for 1920. but believes that he will be able to do better this year. Among the new men who are tnfteld material are Rath and Ellison, both big leaguers. Rath hit .27 for the Cincinnati Reds last season and played his best gam of his major league career, so the fans expectisg him to allow om thing. The outfield appears to be- - more or less settled, with Schick, Kelly and Fltx- - hand-paint- of- - n the American contiplanning nent by foot. The two runners left Yokohama yesterday by tbe steamer Korea Maru for the United States. hev According to tbs clan. will start rrom San iFranetsoo on April 14. They expect to reach New York about July 20. covering an average of about thirty miles each day. Shepard also has taken on some weight since he won the middleweight championship hers last winter and was only two pounds under Llndow when they were put on the scales by Manager Downing last Tuesday. A strange coincidence In connection with these ' big fellows is the fact that curtain-raiser to Shepard Jumped from a a in three bouts Just a year ago, while this will be Undow's fourth bout here, having started as a curtain-raise- r just three weeks. ago last Monday , night. Both of these big fellows are ambitious and determined to continue their climb toward the top, but one or the other will probably have to make a new start after tomorrow night, for they can't both win, and It's dollars to doughnuts that one or the other will be listening to the birdie singing before the end of the sixth round. Th rest of the card appears to be up to the Manhattan club standard, and will hr! Hu together such classy performers as Jay Solomon, the popular and west side boy, and Cyclone Eddie Kelly of Ogden, who made a decided hit last Gethan a Monday when he gave Tommy : . trimming. Elmer Rtultz and Jimmie Munson are who another pair ahould have, the fojis up on their toee all the wav. This pair of boys met at the club several month ago and gav th fanN on of tbe fastest rounds of battling ever seen here, but an unfortunate bumping of heads opened such a bad cut over Munson's eye that Referee Downing refused to let him continue. Btultz has Just recently returned to th city and this Is the first chance they have had to battle it out. Johnny Woodmansee, undefeated flyweight of the west side, will tackle a g prettv proposition in Jo Costello, a Filipino, while two pairs of brand-neyoungalers will furnish the first preliminary and the curtain-raise- :? Plllette Is rapidly rounding Into form and Mao believe that he will make a winner In the Coast league this season. Johnson Is studying hard In hopes of landing a regular berth.
