Lardner for Small Gardeners Gives Tips Flowers Express Several New Sentiments By RING W. LARDNER. To the Editor:. If you got a ah owe r arrangement yeu can make the plant think It raining. , II Is spring, as they say, and in spring a young man a fancy is supposed to turn to thoughts of love, hut I guess theys a lot of people that is thinking about their garden and wonderWei!, March ing what to raise and etc., and tney a plenty of books that tells you what to grow if you got a big farm or a couple ot acres but they aln t no books where a person can learn about gardening if you only got a little piece of property, so maybe some of my admirers would like me to write a few ldears about a garden for people that Uvea In a apartment dr a hotel. Well the 1st thing for the apt. or hotel gardener to do- Is to get some dirt and one way Is to tell all your friends to not use the door mat whep they come m nut wait till you can scrape them off, but in order to be sure of the right kind ot dirt, why Its best to watt till some day when Its been raining and then go where they's some rich soil and lay down and roll over and then come home and get dry and brush yourself on in whatever stxe box you want to have your garden. A clgai box makes a pretty fair size garden for a family of 2 though a humidor Is still better yet as It keeps In the moisture. Big famllys needs more space and they's no better natural site for garden than a bath tub a specially If you got a shower attachment so as you can make the plant think its raining. When a person is going to plant their garden in a cigar box, what you plant depends on whether you want flowers ot vegetables and what kind of cigars they was In the box. When planting vegetables In a limited space like this the main ldear is to plant a whole lot of different kinds so as they will be a few that both the husband and wife likes, for tnst. they wouldn't be no gense In planting a whole bed of catnip when the husband didn't like it even if it was the wits s favorite greens. Some people don't like onions, but If you are going 'to plant gny be sure and plant two, as Its generally always only one person eating them that makes it disagreeable. Another thing In a small box garden, the small Bias vegetables that don't take up much room Is the ones to plant. A pretty good combination for a family of two Is I onions, I shoe string potatoes, 2 noodles and say some broom straw. If the garden is planted In the bath tub, however, a person has got to be oareful to pick out vegetables like pumpkins, squash, mellons, baked potato, gourds and 'etc., that won't run out If the kiddles pulls the stopper. But it its In the apt. flower garden that a person should ought to think twice before they sow. If you got t or ( acres you don't half to pick and choose, bit a box garden can't handle more than 1 or I kinds at lease. Like for Mist, the violet is sup- to b for' modesty, and they tell ms ?ose you go In most of the moveing pitcher stare house and you will find cigar boxes, cuspidors and etc. full of violets. Then they's a couple where the wire use to go around In her bear ft. all the wile and her husband got sick of It and kept bawling her out but she always told him shs couidn t remember to put on bar Upper. So he happened to be reading In Hamlet where Ophelia aaya that pansy Is for remembrtnoe, so he planted a whole lot of pansy, but hi wife kept right on walking around In her bear ft. and then he found out that Ophelia wae rraxy, so he tored up the paneya and planted lady slippers. And then they's couple thoj belongs to a bridge club and the husband Is kind of absent minded and several times his wife led him a suit that she knowed he didnt have no more of them, but he would slough off and loose the trick till finely she cured him ot the habit by An Event Planned Especially for Discriminating, Fashion-criticWomen and Misses al Models portraying youthful lines and dashing styla smartness and cleverly trimmed effects of chic individuality. -- handsomely tailored NOT TO B.E COMPARED up to that high of Youth and WITH THE USUAL .SALE GARMENTS every suit standard of fashioning.
