Thousands of neatly sorted and categorized books were delivered from their temporary home in the old food bank building by Marvin Day and Jeremy Simpsons crew of volunteer County Jail inmates to the sale location at the Senior Center on 100 North Street. Many hundreds of those books were carted off by happy buyers which netted the library $2,329 in sales of books and memberships. Most of the sales took place on the opening Friday night when buyers were lured into the mood by the sight of an all new selection of materials, the sugar high induced by the copious selection of home-bake- d cookies and Donna Metzlers piano playing. The unsold books were returned to their storage to await next years sale. The new library will have space to store all the used books and d even a small area for sales. The cuts to Section 8 and shifting of priorities in HOME will have pay Utah $1.8 million for overcharging the states Medicaid program. Schering Plough Corporation also agreed to pay $282.3 million in civil fines and penalties and $52.5 million in criminal fines to settle claims with the federal government and state Medicaid programs. Drug manufacturers are required by law to sell prescription drugs to Medicaid programs at the lowest available price. From 1998 to 2002, Schering Plough lowered the price for Claritan for the CIGNA and PacificCare health care plans but did not report the price change to the government. This settlement demonstrates that we will aggressively pursue drug manufacturers and any other companies that try to take advantage of taxpayers and consumers, says Shurtleff. According to court papers, this is how Schering Plough broke the law: rebates, interest-fre- e loans and deep discounts on other drugs and services. Physicians were directed to prescribe Claritan Reditabs instead of the regular Claritan tablets in exchange for a $3 million discount. With the rising cost of health care, particularly the rise in drug prices, it is important to protect taxpayers by making sure the state gets the best price. It is unfortunate that some drug companies are getting so greedy at the same time they are already legitimately making record profits, says Wade Farraway, director of the Medicaid Fraud Unit at the Attorney Generals Office. The Utah Attorney Generals Office oversees the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit to protect the integrity of Utahs Medicaid program.
