The October 23 race will be the latest in a series of major milestones in our local history that have happened at that river crossing, said Salmon. In the late 1800s the country was wild, and the roads were wilder. In those days the Grand River - later named the was a natural Colorado barrier to travel and business. The only way to cross the river was on a ferry, whether at According or Moab or at the place eventually called Dewey, where cliffs gave way to low ground, just beyond the confluence with the Dolores River. No one knows exactly why the crossing and the commu- nity it generated took the name Dewey. The first official ferryboat was run by a man named Samuel King, and for a while, the town had a small inn, a post office, and its own school. But river crossing had its hazards. There were numerous drownings, and Kings original boat was ultimately wrecked by ice floes. The last ferryboat operator was Richard Westwood, The Grand County League of Women Voters would like to THANK the candidates in our annual forum. Westwood ultimately returned to law enforcement only to be shot and killed in the line of duty. Visitors to the Dan OLaurie Museum can see his photo and read his story. With the completion of a Moab bridge in 1912, local citizens began a campaign to replace the Dewey ferry with a 502-fo- ot suspension bridge. Construction began in November of 1915 just downriver from the ferry crossing, and Dewey Bridge was completed in less than six months, becoming the second longest suspension bridge west of the Mississippi. The five hundred runners who will gather on October 23, 2004 may be the biggest crowd at Dewey since the opening of Dewey Bridge in April of 1916. While relatively narrow, the Dewey Bridge spent the next 72 years serving all kinds of traffic: people, horses, wagons, cattle, automobiles and trucks. It was replaced in 1988 by the modern neighboring bridge from which the halfmarathon race begins. The historic bridge was restored to its nity effort in 1997. Today, Tons of family fun! The mural ties together the geologic and paleontologic progression of the Mesozoic Era. Each panel depicts one of the three ages of that era Jurassic and Cretaceous - as it all happened in the Moab area.
