Show t3IIC Page A3 Thursday, October 7, 2004 Senior Center groundbreaking represents dream come true After almost a decade of planning, Grand County is about to see a dream come true. On October 14, the entire community is invited to participate in the ceremonial groundbreaking of the new CommunitySenior Center on hopeful that a good crowd will be present for this ceremonious event. This is the first phase of a project that will truly enhance the quality of life for said people in Moab, Langianese. In 1995 when Grand County identified the need to construct a new Senior Center, studies were undertaken to ensure that all potential senior services and resources were considered. Shortly thereafter, Moab City became involved with the idea of constructing an assisted living facility. In 2001, the vision became a little brighter and broader in scope, and MAPS, the Moab Area Partnership for Seniors, was born. The MAPS project, and the CommunitySenior Center specifically, received a boost in their progress when, in 2003, Colin Fryer sold a parcel of land on 500 West and Williams Way to the Grand County Hospital Special Service District for the future construction of a hospital. At that time Fryer donated three acres of land to the County for the construction of the new CommunitySenior center. Once the land was acquired for development of a new senior center, the County was able to apply for grants and loans from the Community Impact Board. CIB is a state run board that takes federal mineral lease money and provides grants and loans to 500 West. The county received $2.5 million in a combination of loans and grants. The Grand County Recreation Special Service District offered matching funds in the amount of $250,000. The Recreation District also volunteered to repay CIB loans from special mineral lease funds used for capital projects. The mineral lease money is currently being used to complete payment of the Old Spanish Trail Arena, which will be paid off in 2005. This complicated financial package allows Grand County to complete construction and open the new Senior Center in 2005. Plans for the assisted living center are underway as well. The City of Moab and Grand County recently teamed to conduct a feasibility study for assisted living in Grand County. The study is now completed and allows area governing bodies to determine the next step in the MAPS project. r multi-yea- Our focus today is on the SeniorCommunity Center, said Langianese, but our eyes are on the future in terms of alternative living options for our seniors. Hopefully we will soon see an end to families having to relocate their elders during the years when they need their community the most. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at noon on Thursday, October 14, at the site of the new Community Senior Center on 500 West and Park Drive. A small group of special speakers will mark the occasion and light refreshments will be served. Seniors who would like to attend can meet at the current SeniorCivic Center at 11:00 a.m. for a shuttle ride to the ceremony.
