One of the most debated and contested issues in ecosystem management revolves around how much these areas have changed during the Anglo settlement and the development of the west. There is a wdde divergence of opinion about vegetation and stream channel condition that preceded current conditions. Monday. April 21st Earl Hindley of the Bureau of Land Management will give a talk at the Moab Information Center (center & main) on observing physical and biological change or riparian areas through historical photographs. This program begins at 7:00 pm and will consist of viewing and discussing 12 photo-coparisons from 10 streams in Southern Utah. ' These historic photographs protray the character of landscapes as they were in the latter 1800s and early 1900s. Retaking photographs from the same location can provide comparisons from which vegetation and stream channel changes can be analyzed and described. Such comparisons are also useful in depicting the dymanic nature and resiliency of riparian ecosystems.
